๐ Did you know that as of March 2026, The National School Food Program Act is officially law?
This means the temporary breakfast and lunch programs are being turned into a ๐permanent, federally mandated๐ program to support students nationwide.
For a long time, Canada was the only G7 nation without a national school food framework. This historic shift ensures that school nutrition programs have predictable, long-term funding.
๐จ๐ฆ Canada is recognizing that feeding students isn't just about giving them an equal chance to succeed in school and in lifeโit also supports working families, strengthens our healthcare system, boosts the economy, and, if executed thoughtfully, protects the environment.
Ontario has been a leader in student nutrition for decades, and our Province wide network Student Nutrition Ontario allows us to share resources and build relationships with donors and community partners.
Here in Eastern Ontario, we are considered a leader having 100% participation from all our publicly funded schools from our community partners Food For Thought , Food Sharing Project and Food For Learning . Now is the time to set our sites on the future of school food, with more meal programs building on our current snack programs.
๐ช๐ผ Together, we can make sure programs reflect children and families, create local jobs, serve locally and sustainably sourced foods, and support the visions of communities.
๐If you would like to lend your voice to the future of school food, please reach out to us as we are looking for committee members for our local student nutrition committees.
