Louis Armstrong, the man with the voice of a trumpet, the King of Jazz, the prince of s**t (singing), is our man of the hour today. Through his New Orleans style, tenacious personality, and influential singing and playing, Louis re-shaped jazz from collective improvisation to solo performance.

So here’s to Louie A, have a wonderful day!

Louis Armstrong - what a wonderful world

1957, John Diefenbaker wins a minority in the 23rd federal election; he remained our PM for the next six years. During his time as our Prime Minister, Diefenbaker became partially responsible for the cancellation of one of Canada’s most ambitious industrial projects: The Avro CF-105 Arrow. A project, which held many high hopes, most of us today have heard something of the Arrow’s demise. I would say it’s the closest thing Canadian industry has to a love story. Today, the Arrow is the stuff of legends.

Do you feel like it's time to let out your inner James Dean? To let loose, stomp that peddle and rip through town? Maybe it's time to re-visit “Rebel Without A Cause” eh. Yes it's a shame that young JD had his life cut short by a rather untimely crash; However, it can be said that he lived life to the fullest, and for that the we remember him. So grab that red jacket, and come for a visit, JD style.

For years, the Peanuts comic strip ran through the prints showing Charlie and friends through all their adventures, and miss-adventures. Editors and authors felt Charlie was in need of a new best friend and on June 1st , 1954, Linus van Pelt and his blanket made their debut. Linus was unusually smart for his age, with a firm grasp on his blanket, became responsible for the coining of the term “Security blanket”.

In 1951 Hemingway was visiting Cuba, wandering through dusty streets, no doubt
smoking a fine cigar. There he came across the local fishermen, hard men with callused hands. It is no easy life to be a man of the sea; our ancestors knew well the pearls of the seafaring life. Across our shores today, men and women still sail out, to bring us back our fish.

It can be difficult to communicate with others sometimes. When there is no translator to be found there’s always a way to get your intentions across. In this clip from “I Love Lucy” It’s hard to say if the mother actually understood why Lucy was acting like a chicken, but she enjoyed it. We hope you do too.

Lucy explains to her mother in law what she will be preparing for dinner.

Ever try watching an old movie on a new TV? It might look completely ridiculous and corny now, hard to bear even. It’s a shame to forget about some of these movies though. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to sit down and watch either a classic from your younger years, or perhaps just an older movie from before you time. Seeing life as it used to be. No special effects, just simple, clean, fun.

1957 was a great year for traveling. People were aching to get out and explore. There were some beautiful cars being produced. Nova Scotia released their new highway map proudly stating, that all major highways are now paved. The American writer and poet Jack Kerouac released the scrolls of “On The Road”; the book that launched a thousand road trips.

These cars and tracks are always great to see, and faces seem to brighten whenever an antique is near. Some are beautiful, little (or rather large) works of art even.

We want to know, which oldie puts a real smile on your face when you see it, or drive it? Is there a classic out there that takes you back?

Today I had the luxury of going for a little spin in a nice 1948 Mercury 1 ton pickup. As I listened to the old girl going through her gears and idling at the stops, the usual comparison of old vs new ran through my head. “They sure don't make them like they used to.” If properly maintained, these cars and trucks are still on the road 50 and 60 years later.

In 1955 Elvis entered the mainstream music scene in the US. He toured around with Billy Haley for a few shows before picking up steam and headlining his own shows. It was in 1956 that The Ed Sullivan Show contracted him for three performances for an unprecedented $50,000, which would be just under half a million dollars today. Not bad for a 20 year old singer in the 50’s, eh?

It seems we have a wet week to look forward to; good ol' April showers. There’s not much to be done for it but watch our lawns and gardens flourish in the wetness while we dream of dry warm summer days. Unless you’re a Gene Kelly fan and feel like having a little dance along the Bedford pathways!
