Funny how things come full circle 💚

Many years ago, Fresh Food Matters began right here… standing at a local farmers’ market with one simple belief: Real food matters.

What started as a small local idea grew into our little restaurant, our amazing team, community of customers, and a business built around making fresh, real food accessible for busy people.

But over the past 8 months, we been quietly working on something NEW!

With encouragement from organizations supporting women entrepreneurs like WBE Canada, and with an opportunity to think bigger about where Fresh Food Matters could go next…
We decided to take two of our most loved products beyond our kitchen walls.

And somehow, it feels fitting that this next chapter is bringing us right back to where so much of our journey began…
Local food. Local farmers. Local partnerships. Local community.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been proudly partnering with Locharber Growers for our ingredinets and fulfilling weekly farm box orders.

Starting this weekend you’ll find these two geat products at the Antigonish Farmers' Market Locharber Table. More locations to come!

And of course, both products are now available at Fresh Food Matters.

This feels like a pretty special milestone for us.

From farmers’ markets… to our own kitchen… and now back into the community again.

Five years ago, Fresh Food Matters started with a simple idea and a small table at our local farmers market.
After a restaurant I was working in closed, I wasn’t sure what the next chapter would look like. What I did know was that I loved food, creativity, and feeding people. The farmers market became the place where Fresh Food Matters was born. Every week we tried new dishes, new flavours, and new ideas. Our community kept coming back, ready to try whatever we created next.
Then came a big leap.
One week into the pandemic, we opened our first brick-and-mortar shop on Main Street. It was a small, cozy space, and the support from our community was incredible. By day three we had completely sold out of food and had to close briefly just to regroup and make more.
As we continued to grow, we quickly realized we needed more space, better parking, and easier access for customers. In year three, we moved to our current location in the mall, completely gutting a storefront and building the Fresh Food Matters space you see today.
Over the last five years, Fresh Food Matters has grown into more than just a place to grab lunch. We’ve become a restaurant, a catering company, and a provider of meal solutions for families, events, and workplaces across our region.
And the next chapter is just beginning.
We’re excited to soon be introducing our Green Goddess Hummus+ and Signature Honey Herb Salad Dressing into retail, with hopes of reaching shelves across Nova Scotia and eventually beyond. There are some exciting things ahead for Fresh Food Matters.
None of this would have been possible without our incredible team and the support of our community. Thank you for believing in us from the very beginning.
To celebrate five years, we’ll be running special promotions all week long — and we can’t wait to celebrate with you.

This weekend was one of those “this is why we do what we do” moments.

Our incredible team had the honour of catering the Guysborough African Heritage Gala in celebration of African Heritage Month — a beautiful night of culture, history, and community. What a privilege to be part of it.

At the very same time, back at the shop, me, Josh and Sasha were elbow-deep in stock pots making 300+ bowls of soup for the Coldest Night of the Year. Because when our community needs support, we show up.

Food is more than food.
It’s dignity. It’s connection. It’s love in a container.

I am so proud of this team. We don’t just run a business — we build community. And that matters.

Thank you to everyone who trusts us to feed your tables and your events.
