June is what is one of the most popular months to visit Botswana. The sun is shining, the light is perfect for photography and the days not too hot and the nights not too cold. The rains have ended and the grass is beginning to thin out, making game viewing easier. If you are planning any day trips in and around Maun, perhaps into the Moremi or even Mokoro rides closer to town please keep in mind the Dusty Donkey does cater.

We do takeaways, packed lunches or cater for complete days. Nothing is too big or too small.

It’s very common to feel hungrier at this time of year and there are very good reasons as to why. The colder weather leads to a drop in our body temperature, which means our appetites get stimulated as a result. This is because eating helps to generate internal heat, subsequently leading to a rise in body temperature.

However you can still eat and remain healthy if you follow a few guidelines. Eastern and Western nutritional experts alike usually believe there is certainly a place for warming herbs and seasoning during the winter months. These include ginger, cinnamon, cloves, mustard, nutmeg, pepper and oregano.

At the Dusty Donkey we only use seasonal fruits and vegetables and have spent many years researching the perfect combinations of herbs and spices to load our Buddha bowls with antioxidants and health-boosting plants that nuetralise free radicals.

Here are but a few: Dark Leafy Greens such as spinach and rocket are rich in vitamins A, C, and K act as potent antioxidants. Red cabbage, shredded beets, and sweet potatoes are loaded with anthocyanins and beta-carotene to protect cells from damage. Quinoa is an excellent grain that provides disease-fighting phytonutrients. Chickpeas, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds provide Vitamin E and trace minerals like selenium, which support skin regeneration and cellular health.

So next time that winter peckish feeling comes around - do yourself a favour, go the the Dusty Donkey and order the Buddha Bowl of the day off our specials board.

The Green Season is drawing to a close, and Maun is slowly shifting into winter and the Safari Season. The summer rains are fading, the days are warm and clear, and there is a renewed energy in town as travellers begin arriving — by air and by road — ready to explore Botswana and the Okavango Delta.

The Dusty Donkey Café is situated on Airport Road, just a few minutes’ walk from Maun International Airport and conveniently close to a variety of shops, including general stores, liquor stores, pharmacies and a small market of local crafters and artisans.

After many years of trading in Maun, our staff are always happy to help travellers with advice and recommendations for their trip. Whether you are looking for fresh supplies, camping essentials, vehicle parts, spices, curios, or local crafts, we can point you in the right direction.

We proudly support local — from fresh produce to artists and makers from the area — and we are ready to welcome familiar faces and new visitors alike with good coffee, fresh food, friendly service, and a relaxed place to pause before the next adventure begins. So come in for a slice of cake, a light lunch, or simply a quiet moment in the warm winter sunshine.

A gentle reminder that Mother's Day is on Sunday: a day when our mothers are pampered, treated, and made sure they know we love them and are thankful for all the hard work they have put in over the years.

The Dusty Donkey is open. So please bring your special mother, whether it be a grandmother, an adoptive mother, a birth mother or a mother you admire and respect and would like to show her your gratitude.

Look out for our Daily Specials Board on our social pages to see what's on the menu.

Botswana is moving into what we call the flood season, as waters from Angola slowly make their way into the Delta, transforming it into a maze of channels, lagoons, and islands. Entering the northern Panhandle in late April, these waters take their time, reaching the southern stretches by June or July and peaking in August.

This year, predictions are for an exceptionally high flood, perhaps one not seen for years.

The days in Maun remain warm, the evenings cooler, and it’s a beautiful time to experience this quiet shift in seasons. Just a few minutes’ walk from Maun International Airport and close to craft markets the Dusty Donkey Café is perfectly placed for a good coffee, fresh, tasty food, or a takeaway on the go. Open 7 days a week.

“Hot coffee. Cold drinks. No bad moods allowed,” reads the chalkboard outside the Dusty Donkey Café in Maun.

And that is about right. Just a short walk from the airport, inside or outside, we have a spot for you — a shady table, a quiet corner, or a workspace with WiFi. We pride ourselves on providing consistently good service and fresh, tasty food. The Dusty Donkey motto is: “Nothing is too big or too small — and always fresh.”

Freshly squeezed juices and farm eggs done right, our daily specials are shaped by what’s good at the local markets. Think generous Buddha bowls and a cake table that’s never short of something freshly baked.

No rush. No fuss. Just honest food, strong coffee, and a place that feels like yours.
