Discover the Haynes Library
On November 11, 1897, Governor Haynes-Smith walked from Cupid's Cay, where he had landed, to dedicate the library and open it for the first time.
Over time the library was pushed up to the second floor while the rest of the building served government purposes. It was later closed, its books were disposed of, and it was slated for demolition.
Then the town stepped in. In 1994, neighbours formed the Friends of the Library. They replaced the roof, restored the original gingerbread trim, hung new shutters, and filled the shelves again, one donated book at a time.
The building is known for its pink exterior with turquoise hurricane shutters and trim.
Today the Haynes Library sits where the causeway to Cupid's Cay meets the harbour road. It still has pink walls and turquoise shutters, and the harbour is still right outside the windows.
