A few weeks ago, Damien had the opportunity to join the judging panel at Berraquera Fest, a local coffee festival in Huila. He was invited by our partners at Cuatro Vientos, who organised the event around the producers and coffees of Santa María.

Over two days, he tasted some of the region’s best lots alongside the other judges. The festival also brought producers and their families together for brewing and cupping competitions aimed at younger generations, before the best coffees were presented at auction.

One of the highlights was seeing how much talent there is in the younger generation. A big congratulations to the winner of the brewing competition, and to everyone who took part.

Someone with at least one year of barista experience, fluent in English and French, who feels at home in a busy bar and cares about good coffee and hospitality.

In this role, you’ll prepare and serve coffee, welcome guests and help keep the daily service running smoothly as part of the team.

Miriam Quesada is back. Green grapes, cherry and mint, an expressive coffee.

We've been buying Miriam's coffees since 2023 and visited her farm, El Guayacan, in 2024. Set on a steep hillside in Acevedo, Huila, the farm sits at 1550 masl and is planted mainly with Pink and Striped Bourbon.

This Superfreak is an anaerobic natural Pink Bourbon. We roast it relatively light to preserve its fruit-forward character and more subtle herbal notes.

At our shops, we will be serving it as a flight: hot brew alongside a cold brew. This lets you taste two different expressions of the same coffee side by side.

Miriam’s coffee has become a favourite among our team and many of our customers. It’s a distinct profile we look forward to every year, and it usually goes fast, so get it while it’s here.

Sweet and milky, with notes of purple grape, red apple, chocolate and chestnut, our latest Moon
Safari comes from Finca Calahute in Huehuetenango.

This washed Bourbon is produced by Alfonso Anzueta Jr., whose family has grown coffee at the
farm for three generations. We first cupped it with Eduardo from Prisma Coffee during our visit to
Guatemala earlier this year.

Finca Calahute sits between 1300 and 1800 masl, where cool temperatures allow the cherries to
ripen slowly. After picking, they are pulped, fermented in water and washed, before drying on
patios and in mechanical dryers.

Sunny days, pétanque, our annual BBQ and a few new releases. August has been a bright one behind the scenes at Wide Awake.

Between busy shifts at the shops and roastery, there were plenty of coffees to brew and the occasional team selfie. We also held our internal AeroPress competition, where three winners earned their place representing Wide Awake at the Belgian AeroPress Championship.

The BBQ brought everyone together for the afternoon, and a friendly game of pétanque quickly brought out everyone’s competitive side.🔥

Meanwhile, Damien travelled to Colombia for an origin trip. He joined the judging panel at Berraquera Fest and met 10-year-old Shirly, who took first place in the children’s cupping competitio.

Kenya & Natural: two words you don’t often hear together.

Almost everything in Kenya’s coffee system is built around washed processing, so only a handful of producers make naturals. We first tasted this lot while cupping in Nairobi in 2025 and have been trying to secure it ever since.

Chepsangor Hills Estate was founded by Dr. Rosebella Langat and her husband in Nandi Hills. Grown at 1850 masl, this coffee keeps its juicy, berry-like Kenyan character, while the natural process adds extra sweetness and fruitiness.

Expect notes of w**e gum, cherry coke, orange blossom and cacao.
