Cameraderie, team work, friendship, partnership, love - particularly love for the environment, shone through when 35 volunteers gathered to clean Easy Hall Gully, St Joseph on May 25, 2026
This was the second Sustainable KFC initiative to clean natural spaces in Barbados and volunteers executed this shared vision with care, alacrity and respect for the environment.
While they were excited and energised, volunteers were also appalled at the range of items carelessy tossed into a space so vital to Barbados' ecosystem.
Kianna Barrow, Sustainable KFC team lead for the natural space clean up initiative, explained that on May 25, in addition to cleaning the gully at Easy Hall, volunteers were clearing Sargassum Seaweed from Bath Beach, St John. These activities were undertaken in light of World Environment Day, which is June 5.
Kianna said May 25 marked the second time Sustainable KFC tackled the build up of seaweed at Bath Beach. The first clean up was April 28, where the Sustainable KFC initiative was launched. She said this reinforces the company's commitment to maintaining natural spaces.
Chad Barrow, Consultant Project Coordinator (Gullies) in The Ministry of the Environment and his team, assisted Sustainable KFC with the selection of the gully and thoughtfully and methodically guided where necessary.
Along with the group from The Ministry of The Environment, we were joined by supporting partner Caribbean Youth Environment Network (CYEN), Royalty Ballers Over 50s (who really "put their backs into it") and KFC staff who laid the groundwork for cleaning the gully.
While the group was busy removing plastics, metals, leaves and animal remains from Easy Hall Gully, the group at Bath Beach, which included Girl Guides, collected 311 bags of Sargassum seaweed, weighing 14,288.26 lbs over 1.6 km.
The diverse groups at both locations had one shared vision, to protect Barbados' environment and ensure its sustainability for future generations.
Managing Director Lisa Davis summed up the initiative by saying the natural space clean ups are Sustainable KFC's way of assisting Barbados in reaching the 2030 agenda.
