How to dial in your Breville espresso machine at home (beginner friendly)

New Breville and your shots are running too fast or too slow? I’d never worked in a cafe either. This is how I dial in my espresso, step by step.

The 3 things to know:
1. Dose (the “grind amount” on your Breville): how much ground coffee goes in the basket. Aim for 18 to 22 g.
2. Grind size: the finer the grind, the slower your shot pours.
3. Extraction time: how long your shot takes to pour. Aim for 25 to 30 seconds.

Step 1: Set your dose
Tare your portafilter on a scale, grind, then weigh. Adjust the grind amount up or down until you land between 18 and 22 g.

Step 2: Set your grind size
Pull a shot and time it. It should start dripping at around 7 to 8 seconds.
Dripping sooner? Grind finer.
Nothing after 13 seconds? Grind coarser.
Change one thing at a time so you know what made the difference.

Step 3: Check your shot
You’re after 25 to 30 seconds, a thick crema on top and a deep, rich colour underneath.
The easiest shortcut: fresh, quality beans.
