Have you ever wondered why the first-ever we**am was built? Well, it was built to watch a coffee pot. No, we’re not joking, it’s true!

In 1991, the researchers at the University of Cambridge rigged up a camera so that they could check whether the coffee pot was full or not.

To save people working in the building the disappointment of finding the coffee pot empty after making the trip to the room, a camera was set up providing a live picture of the coffee pot to all desktop computers on the office network.

After the camera was migrated from their laboratory network to the web in 1993, the coffee pot gained international notoriety as a feature of the fledgling World Wide Web, until it was retired in 2001!
