The end of week 2
Wolfmuvva and I are more familiar with the lodges and have spent time in the freight depot and Leanne taught one co-worker how to drive a manual (in a classy 79 series ute) so she can do the garbage run in a manual vehicle soon.
No more snow to report and in the photos you’ll see how it’s currently being moved around.
Enjoy the photos and comments.

If you’re like me, you see massive areas of dead snow gums around Perisher and other parts of the Snowy Mountains National Park and wonder why this is happening and more and more trees are dying.

Some have been damaged by fire and will grow back but other snow gum dieback is happening due to our warmer winters which allow an increase of the native longicorn beetle.

Their larvae burrow under the bark and eat the layer that carries water and nutrients through the tree, effectively ringbarking the tree. This weakens the tree, causing branches to die and, in some cases, the whole tree to die.
Trees that are already stressed by drought, frost or other damage are most at risk.

Being a native insect, the longicorn beetle cannot be controlled by pesticides or other eradication methods however scientists are working to produce snow gum trees which are less prone to this “innocent predator”.

A much enjoyed day off, a sleep-in, 2 coffees and a nice walk around the village followed by a drive to The Ridge chairlift at Blue Cow accessible by the Link Road from Smiggins

Still no snow, Leanne and I feel for the many businesses and their staff who have come here for the season expecting work but either laid off or given an early holiday.

Day 3, temperatures expected to reach 13° 😳
A mixed day of training, time familiarising ourselves with the roughly 91 lodges in Perisher, we are mainly working with people but may chip in when needed to help with freight or garbage services which 4Site also does.
We are blessed to be working for a wonderful family, the owners are amazing and the staff employed for their attitudes before anything else so the meal room is quite enjoyable with a lot of friendly banter.
We did many laps of Perisher, targeting the worst driveways and access to get comfortable with that. A stint in the freight area where ALL freight for the 4 areas is managed. Perisher, Smiggins, Charlotte Pass and Blue Cow, I’ll have to find out where Guthega’s freight is managed. some time cleaning vehicles, Leanne and I were happy to clean 5 of the snow cats, after lunch Leanne went into admin and took delight in bossing me around, creating fictitious pick-ups and “taxi runs”
We are blessed that it is quiet, which allows for all new employees to get familiar with systems and locations, in two weeks time Queensland will be having their school holidays followed by New South Wales & Victoria, then it will be “game on”.

I am very proud of Leanne, moving here to start a new job she wasn’t really wanting to do, but here she is giving 100% in training
Today was an interesting one with very cold temperatures due to the wind chill.
We did some more driving training and some more inductions for the Can Am Leanne’s driving and the Pistenbully “people movers” that I’ll be driving.
A fun day and great to be doing something different.

We survived the day
Strewth there’s a lot of lodges in Perisher and Smiggins, many with rather dodgy driveways (while snowless) looking forward to it dumping, some decent snow and being able to drive the good gear.

Can’t ask for a better forecast model to add to your weather prediction arsenal, and Pete is a local to The Gong also.

The Snowatch daily forecasts begin tomorrow and will be updated every day through to the closing weekend in October.
Snowatch is the only forecasting site that doesn’t use algorithms to spit out the forecasts. I personally check weather charts, data and satellite images each morning and manually add all text, icons and snowfall amounts for each resort. Snowatch is 100% independent and tells it like it is.
Here’s to another good season! ❄️ 🐸
