Marong Family Hotel, Saturday 27th August 2022 – Dinner

Marong is a little town about 13km west of Bendigo, boasting the very popular Marong Family Hotel. Marong Family hotel has a few dining areas within, as well as the traditional bar service, and a fantastic outside area for meals and functions.

We had a table booked for 6:30pm, and arrived early, with a few minutes to spare.
Upon entry to the venue, we could immediately see that they were extremely busy, as it was hard to move through the venue with so many people. It took 8 minutes to be greeted and shown to our table, as we waited for others in front of us to be served and seated. The greeting was extremely friendly, and welcoming, with an apology for taking so long to attend to our dining party.

The tables throughout the venue were set for maximum patronage, with little room to move between tables once patrons were seated. Not only did this lose the intimacy of the dining experience, but it also made the environment extremely noisy. Tables seated so closely next to each other, people could be part of the conversations being had on the tables next to them, as everything could be heard from nearby diners.
If we had wanted an intimate dinner for two, tonight was not the night for it, it was way too busy for that.

Once seated at the table, the server said she’d be back in about 5 minutes or so to take our orders, once we’d had a chance to look at the menu.
The menu had a great range of foods, catered for children, with Vegetartian, Vegan and Gluten free meals available.

22 minutes went by, and we had to go and find someone to take our order for us, the staff were just so busy bringing out meals and clearing tables, that it seemed placing our order was forgotten about.

I ordered the Chicken Parmigiana with chips and salad, at a cost of $24.
Given how busy they were, the meals arrived in a reasonable amount of time, and were hot and fresh. Some of the chips were underneath the parmigiana, and if you’ve been following this page, you’ll know this is a pet hate of mine. The chicken was quite thick, and cooked perfectly through, moist and tender. The topping of ham, Napoli and cheese was delicious, and there was ample covering the chicken.
Chips were a thick cut, and perfectly seasoned, and delivered hot. Slightly crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside – the way a good chip should be.
Salad was bright, colourful and very fresh. Base of lettuce, with julienne cucumber, carrot, onion, tomato and topped with freshly shredded beetroot. The dressing was lovely and refreshing, and not overdone.
Meal size was large and filling. And all elements on the plate were delicious.

Once our meals were finished, and being cleared, the server asked if we’d like dessert. Our dining party obliged, and dessert was ordered without leaving the table

I ordered a Brandy basket with Bailey’s icecream and fresh strawberries, at a cost of $12.50.
it was presented well, and the brandy basket itself fresh and crunchy. The Baileys ice cream was delicious, and I’d love to be able to buy that by the tub! The Strawberry on top was fresh. Given the explanation of the dessert on the menu, I expected more than one Strawberry on the plate, but one was ample with the serving size of the dessert.
Brandy Baskets are one of my favourite desserts, so it’s great to see them on the menu, I wish more places would offer them.

The Marong Family Hotel is a very popular, well attended and very obviously loved venue.
With the high quality of the meals at such a great price, and friendliness of the staff, I’d be excited to come back during a quieter dining time, and try again, I believe during a quieter period, I would enjoy the atmosphere more.
The biggest downside for me, was the tables needing to be a bit more spaced apart, so it wasn’t so packed with people, however after 2 years of Covid interruptions, I can understand that they are making maximum use of the space they have.

All in all, they had great food, and are very reasonably priced. I hope to come back again soon

Lunch meal at The All Seasons International, on 26th Aug 2022,

Porterhouse with Mushroom sauce. $27

Staff at the bistro were friendly and welcoming, able to sit anywhere, as the lunch dining was quiet (approx. 20 other diners). Atmosphere was inviting, and well-spaced between tables.
Ordering was a quick and easy process, I ordered the Porterhouse Steak, to be cooked medium, with a mushroom sauce, and sides of chips and salad.

Meal was delivered within 13 minutes after ordering, which I thought was great, as one of the diners I was with had a Well-done steak, and our meals were all bought out together.

There was no steak knife to arrive with my meal, other people I was dining with who ordered steak had the steak knife brought out with the meal, bizarrely mine didn’t. Thankfully the standard knife was able to cut through the meat, as it was hard to grab the attention of staff to request one.

My steak was cooked closer to Medium-Well done once cut open. Very little pink inside the meat, and some places quite burnt on the outside. It was still very tasty. Mushroom sauce was delicious, plenty of the gravy, could have done with more mushrooms – but that is just my personal preference.
One thing I did notice, the steak used to come with a little cocktail flag, outlining how the steak was cooked - this time, this little indicator was no longer a flag - but was a small plastic stake, which seemed to me to be an odd change to have been made when there is so much media presence around reducing the use of plastic.

The chips were well cooked, slight crunch on the outside, soft on the inside, and well-seasoned, and extremely hot in temperature, which I loved – hate having cold chips.

The salad was beautifully fresh, great use of colour, Lettuce, carrot, onion still very crisp, and being extremely picky, the tomato was just a little soft, but totally acceptable to be used – this is me just being extremely critical. The dressing was refreshing, and had the perfect amount drizzled over the salad.

As there was no rush to our dining experience, we felt comfortable and were able to take our time with our meals and conversations. I always appreciate this, there's nothing worse than feeling like you need to eat as quick as possible and leave straight away. Relaxed dining with good conversation is always better.

Overall, a pleasant experience, meals were good value for their price.
Will eat here again

Noticed “The McIvor” reopened about a month or so ago, and finally getting to try it out.
On arrival, the gas heaters outside the door immediately create the feeling of warmth and comfort. On entry to the pub, I noticed the lay out had changed to that of previous owners, and touch ups around the place had been made.
The young male bar staff was very friendly and welcoming.
Very easy to order meals and drinks.
The atmosphere is lovely, intimate and inviting, from the entry through to the beer garden.

Menu was fairly standard, but varied, everyone should be able to find something to try.
There were a few gluten free options available.

Whilst the dining area and lounge are beautifully presented, It’s very loud, with heaps of background noise. Only 7 people here, and the noise level is quiet high.
The dining area was home to a Large TV with NBA basketball final, which was actually great to watch, but loud, and also background music throughout the building.
I found it hard to hear the server, and noticed people needing to raise their voices to speak to each other at tables.
I dine alone when I’m doing reviews, but can see that I would have trouble hearing conversations of a friend if I was dining with someone.

Quaint little beer garden out the back, absolutely perfect for functions. Great use of space.

Meal arrived in 18 minutes from ordering, which was great, as I’d ordered a Porterhouse steak. Meal presentation was fairly standard, however the aroma coming from the plate made my mouth water with seconds.
Only negative - chips under the protein. That’s purely my personal preference to not have chips underneath, but large serve makes that hard, certainly not a negative point against the McIvor - it’s just what I like.
My Steak was cooked beautifully, nice amount of pink through it, seasoned well.
Mushroom sauce was delicious, but could have done with more - that’s only my personal preference again. What was given was adequate.

Chips were thick cut, well seasoned and very plentiful.
Salad was well dressed, vegetables selected were fresh and crisp.
Lettuce, capsicum, tomato, onion, cucumber were used.

I deliberately sat with view of the kitchen, so I could see the meals leaving there, all looked amazing with large serves.

Noticed that everyone eating today completely finished their meals, there was nothing sent back, or remaining uneaten.

All in all, a great dining experience, cozy atmosphere, delicious food, friendly staff.
Initial visit was great - only thing I’d change would be internal noise, everything else was spot on.

I wish the new publicans much success with their new endeavour!
I hope to be able to visit again soon.

Walked through side entrance, no-one to greet. Straight through the bar and across to the bistro, without seeing a staff member. No one to check Covid sign in or vaccination status.

Was finally greeted when lined up at the Bistro service desk.
Male who greeted was very friendly, and accommodating. I requested a table for one, away from others. This was in a good spot, until more diners came in and were seated right next to me. Despite huge dining area being empty.

Ordering meals was effortless.
Separate ordering for drinks via the bar, which is a bit annoying. Bar in the dining room was closed, so for me to get another drink, I had to leave my table unattended and walk across the venue to the main bar
Found it odd that with a large dining area, and ability to space dining parties out, they seated everyone within one quarter of the dining room, all adjoining tables.

Quite a large selection of meals on offer, I ordered Porterhouse steak with mushroom sauce, chips and salad. Took about 20 minutes to arrive at the table.

Steak was served on top of chips - which is a huge pet hate of mine. Hate the meat being served on chips.
Steak appeared to be cooked to perfection, nice and pink inside, however the underside was quite burnt. Could have used a lot more sauce/gravy.
Abundance of chips, which were nice, and fresh, however they were quite poorly seasoned.
Salad was fresh and crisp. Dressing was very scarce but what I could taste was delicious. Could have used more dressing.

Dining experience was pleasant, although not overly personable. Felt a bit like ‘get them in, feed them, get them out’ type of dining.

It’ll be interesting to see what dinner service brings. Might try room service for that one.

Easy location
Warmly welcomed on entry, host was very chirpy and well mannered. Listening to him speak to regular customers sounds like he has a great friendly rapport with them. Remembers names, and engages in polite friendly conversation. Every customer was clearly very welcome and treated as though they were important and special.

Ordering was quick and easy.

Lots of people in the dining room, all appeared to be enjoying their food. Servers were polite and courteous when delivering meals.

My meal was ready quickly.
Satay Chicken and Small fried Rice.
The Satay was mild, but absolutely delicious, vegetables were crisp. Meal was hot.
Smaller container than I was expecting but food was very filling.
The fried rice was quite standard, but fresh and delicious. And absolutely divine when mixed with the satay sauce.

I’d happily go back many times. Hopefully next time to dine in, because all of the staff were just so lovely and truly valued anyone that walked in the door.

Staff were very welcoming on arrival, check in and Covid vax cert required and sighted. Hand sanitizer available at multiple points around the venue.

Easy seating, well spread out.
Very tidy, and clean. Carpet in bistro does have some staining.

Staff very accomodating to single table seating.

Easy ordering system, drinks able to be ordered with the meal, instead of having to order separately at the bar.

Good range of meals and wines on the menu

Gluten free and vegetarian options available

Seniors, kids and Bar menu available.
Desserts available via specials board.

Ordered medium porterhouse, mushroom sauce, with chips and salad.
Arrived relatively quickly.
The porterhouse was over cooked - to a med-well. Portion size was good.
Salad was crisp and fresh. Large portion, and dressed nicely.
Chips well seasoned.
Mushroom Sauce was served in a side bowl, and was almost cold. But nice when added to steak.

Once bistro was busy, it was very loud, and service became quite slow. Understandably.
Good atmosphere, but hard to hear people talking once busy.

Would happily eat here again, hopefully when less busy.
