Next Friday the 3rd of May marks one year since Denne went out for an afternoon paddle and didn't come home.

During that time almost 12 months ago (and long since), the Thursday Island community and all of the small communities Denne was a part of, rallied together in a display of immeasurable love and support for us and each other. For that, our family is forever grateful.

We recognise that people may want to come together again to mark this date and so would like to invite you to a church mass at the Thursday Island Catholic Church at 5pm. This will be followed by a community gathering at the Thursday Island Bowls Club from 630pm. Food will be available. All welcome.

Goodnight families,

Unfortunately I have been asked to take down the tributes to Denne that have collected in the tree where the van used to be parked.

While the beautiful flowers and momentos are no longer there, the tree remains for all to enjoy and to remember Denne.

Thank you to everyone who placed a special tribute under the tree and to our special friends who helped me take them down this afternoon. I am keeping them safe at home.

For those lucky enough to live in a small island community, they know it has a rare quality hard to find elsewhere. Everyone always says good morning and greets you with a smile. Most people know your name and everyone waves at your car as you drive down the main street. And if you're really lucky, your community becomes your family. When the unimaginable happens, they look after you, wrap their arms around you, protect you, and rally together to do everything in their power to support you.

TI is no exception. I know Denne meant so much to this community, and the outpouring of love, respect and support we have received from the island, has been nothing short of incredible. Kiva and I, Denne's family and mine, will be forever grateful. We are so thankful to be able to call Thursday Island our home and to share in the special kind of love that only comes from living in a place like this.

But it’s not just TI, Denne created something special wherever he lived and he had a special quality and irresistible warmth that made him friends who became family wherever we lived. And we’ve felt that love and support from afar, from extended family and friends, the paddling community and beyond.

I haven’t been able to thank everyone individually, but I want you all to know know how grateful I am.

To reward players who show great sportsmanship and resilience each Saturday morning while learning a new sport certificates for a free iced chocolate will be awarded!!
