Coconuts 🌴🥥

From a young green coconut filled with refreshing water, to a mature brown nut with thick, rich flesh, every stage of the coconut has its own unique characteristics and uses. It’s one of nature’s most remarkable fruits, providing food, drink, fiber, oil and building materials for tropical communities around the world.

At Thala, guests can discover the fascinating journey of the coconut on our complimentary Coconut Odyssey Tour, scheduled twice a week. Learn how to identify the different stages of growth and uncover the many uses of this incredible palm, whilst gaining a deeper appreciation for one of the tropics’ most iconic plants.

Thala Beach Nature Reserve is proudly home to one of the largest coconut plantations in Australia, with roughly 650 palms. An iconic location prominently positioned on the Captain Cook Highway south of Port Douglas.

Tiny but mighty, green ants are some of the most fascinating residents of Tropical North Queensland. 🐜💚

Green ants play an important role in the ecosystem, helping to control insect populations and contributing to the rich biodiversity that makes Tropical North Queensland and Thala such a special place.

A special wildlife moment 🦔

One of Thala’s resident echidnas was spotted burrowing along a forest path.

It’s not everyday an echidna is spotted here at Thala - they are one of the world’s only egg-laying mammals, known as monotremes, alongside the platypus.

These shy and fascinating native animals are always a delight to encounter.

The rainforest’s gentle giant.

The Hercules moth, one of the largest in the world, was spotted near Osprey’s Restaurant as guests were able to marvel at the striking wingspan and delicate patterns.
