Fast crops are great for garden motivation 🌱 A few I’d start with:
🌱 Microgreens are the quickest if you want something fresh fast.
🥬 Baby spinach, arugula, lettuce, and mustard greens are great for small harvests.
🌿 Green onions are easy and don’t need much space.
❤️ Radishes are perfect when you want a quick win from seed.
💧 Keep the soil evenly moist so seeds sprout quickly and don’t stall.
I like growing these when I need that “something is actually happening” feeling in the garden.

Our old composting station for all of the coco peat that was returned to us in pots. We used to add a bit of manure and hay and turn occasionally to produce rich dark soil for our outdoor crops. Simple construction, just some star pickets and corrugated iron with the weight of the compost holding the iron in place. TIP - ensure roots from your garden cant get into your mulch pile or they will turn it into a rootball !!

Bit of an interesting, colourful array of microgreens showing the contrasting differences between varieties. Chunky Purple radish bottom level, Swiss Chard and some Amaranth pots. In this part of the grow room we have 2 systems side by side with airwalls blowing towards the centre from the outer sides and ultimately out the front before returning to the inlets again. These keeps the air flowing through crops, reducing temperature stratification, virtually eliminating micro-climates and making life very difficult for any mold spores - which is a big part of the reason we dont experience mold problems.
Another bonus is that the leaf boundary layer has frequent air exchanges, eliminating the phenemon whereby the crops are strarved for CO2. When everything else is optimised, CO2 becomes the limiting factor.

Our cleaning station ! Its not flash but in case you dont have a facility already or yours is a bit small here's a relatively cheap and easy DIY option ! Just cut the top part off an IBC and rotate it to rest on the bottom part. We have mains powered sprayer to do the dirty work and a sump pump in the bottom routed to a drain so we never need to worry about draining it. Just a couple hundred $$$ and bit of cutting, add a drain rack and you're set. TIP - ensure you buy an IBC with steel frame that support the IBC bottom and top - some dont have the full frame (like this one, we needed to insert some 25mm square ali in the top section to support the sink).

A new grow room from www.futureearthfarms.com taking shape a very long way from home - this is in Bulgaria of all places ! Purchased by a can do lady with an eye for detail - she is a qualified vetinarian looking for a career change - very soon about to start potting up her 1st crops. Fully committed now there's no turning back but thats how you gotta roll sometimes if you want to hit the ground running. Rather than starting small, bootstrapping it and building up over time she decided to get a cranking grow room from the get go, so she has the capacity to land the big fish in the early days. Converting capital into capacity. She has our full support on all fronts - technology + growing + business support. We'd like to see this project at capacity within 6 months, its possible 😀

Some really nice Italian parsely pots here. Cool leaf shape and popular taste profile, we sell a fair few to cheffies. Like celery it takes a good 3 weeks to grow, its slow to get going but once it does it powers up quickly and can get very leggy so you need to time it just right ✅️

This watercress is ridiculous right ? Just a tad too small on Sunday and then before Wednesday our next packing day for wholesale client it just goes crazy 🤪 Had to remove it ! Its quite a spicy thing but very delicate - definitely NOT for cut mixes as due its fragility it starts to go soft, rot and take down the rest of the mix with it. We feel its best only as live potted product. Exxy seed but a little goes a long way.

Layers of radish anyone :-) This is a big part of our mix, twice a week x 16 trays of purple and green go into our mixes. Its great for weight, it add that zesty radish punch and the purple really adds to the colour so your mix pops visually. We use 30 grams of seed for the green and 40 grams for the purple, seems to work out nicely. The green radish is the Daikon variety but I find almost any variety works for the green.

A bit of red deer mizuna, aka red streaks Mizuna, aka "coral" to the rear, it gors by all sorts of different names.
This is awesome stuff for cut mixes to give them a bit of an upspec with its fancy variegated foliage and colours. Its also super hot almost like Wasabi. Very fast and easy to grow, about 10 days to this size, hard to go wrong.

Tray of perfect potted Celery Microgreens. One of the best looking mixrogreens we think for its leaf shape and its vibrant green colour - is there anything more green I ask you ?! Yes it takes a long time to grow - even with powerful lighting it's 3 weeks to this size - but its just so reliable and seed cost is just cents per tray, so it's almost like its free 😀

Swiss Chard Microgreens. How red are they at germination !? The biggest challenge is them damn seed hulls which like to stick around. Adequate moisture levels during germination (to soften the hulls) and leaving them stacked for just a bit longer helps !

A much anticipated consignment arrived today - oh the trepidation when I finally got to use it and boom - winner !! Can fill 18 pots at a time now. Just need an 18 face flattening tool to complete the process now this is a confirmed successful prototype. This will be a MASSIVE time saver, arguably 18 times as fast as filling pots 1 at a time. I can envisage another tool to enable a seeding machine designed for 1020 trays to do its thing filling our pots as well.

Inspired by the the 1020 tray harvester by Itty Bitty Micro Farm Thank guys, I think hicks is the man. So I decided to make one myself :-) Not as flash as the real deal, I so want one, but I'm in Australia, and I cant wait. Yet to trial it but keen as and yes that's a not-cheap high carbon steel blade.
Materials list : 5mm aquaflute, 25mm ali angle, double sided tape and a 30cm knife.

On the search for a better solution than cocopeat for growing in 1020 trays - silicone mesh vs synthetic fibre vs h**p matts.

I'm leaning towards silicone to eliminate ongoing media cost but I kinda like the synthetic fibre matts, except for the fact they aren't compostable. Plant cellulose would be my preference but rather hard to get here in Australia 🇦🇺

What do you think about these options ?

Cut purple radish microgreens ready for packaging. Pretty hard to go wrong with this crop and it adds a big ol splash of purple into cut mixes, as well as weight and that hot radish hit ! Wouldn't be a cut mix without purple radish !! Whats your favourite must have inclusion in a mix ?

Peppermint Microgreens. These are grown in pots, they take a while, like celery @ 3 weeks but do have an amazing aroma and taste ! Mostly used as a garnish for deserts, and in demand because a lot of growers dont like growing them due to very high price of seed and if your lighting is a bit weak they will take longer than 3 weeks - like 4 weeks or more - which is forever in the microgreens business. One mistake in that long grow and its all for nothing.

Picture perfect live potted Shiso microgreens. Exquisitely unique aroma and flavour. Dark purple and red tinks makes this a very popular choice with chef's especially in asian restaraunts. The seed for Shiso is notoriously fickle, if its not stored in fridge we find it often fails and it just switches off !

Rocket, aka Aragula Microgreens. Ok they arent that exciting too look at but its always gratifying to see them happy. Fast to grow and with a hot hit. This crop is relatively straight forward to grow, just be sure you have good airflow, the right amount of seed per tray and be careful to not water over frequently - sometimes less is more ! These are one of the varieties that go into our cut mixes that really add to the flavour profile.

Cool views into the centre of our grow systems. Airwalls each side blow a gentle steam of air through crops. In this view some green shiso, chives on the left and some cut trays of red cabbage just starting out in life on the right in the foreground. Airflow through crops is one of the biggest secrets in microgreens - get it right and just about all your mold, sweating, rot and dampening off problems just dissapear. Say goodbye to microclimates 👋

Potted chives looking splendid this week. They grow to this size in around 10-14 days and at least for us - our customers like them younger and shorter so the black seed hull remains attatched ! The biggest downside with this variety is seed cost, expensive seed and quite a lot needed by weight so beware 😉
