From 2027, the State medal pathway to Nationals has been removed for senior para athletes. It remains for able-bodied athletes and junior para athletes.

This isn’t just about Juju.

At the 2026 Nationals, 29 of 134 Australian para athletes fell short of the new 2027 standard in every event they raced.

From 2027, a State medal no longer gets senior para athletes to Nationals. Able-bodied athletes keep that pathway. Junior para athletes keep it. Senior para athletes don’t.

For three seasons, winning a medal at her State Championships was Juju’s way to Nationals. From 2027, that pathway is gone for senior para athletes.

2023: Australian Nationals, competed with support
2025: Support refused. She couldn’t compete in the 400m or long jump.
Sport Integrity Australia found systemic issues led to her not being able to compete, and worked on a clearer process so athletes could request support before competing.
2026: support refused for the 400m.
2027: the State medal pathway, her way to Nationals every time, is closed for Open para athletes.

She is still training.

Two races into the season.

60m: 11.37, then 11.44.
200m: 37.87

For three seasons, a State medal was Juju’s only way to Nationals. In 2027 that pathway is closed for Open para athletes.

So why is she still racing?

Because every para athlete who comes after her deserves the same way in as all other athletes. She’s racing so that changes. She’s racing to encourage other para athletes to compete and to create more competition and lift para athletes up.
