What work will I be doing?

Main Roads Western Australia is seeking an enthusiastic individual to join our Pilbara Region as a Civil Construction Apprentice.

These Civil Construction Apprenticeships commence in January.

With opportunities in Port Hedland, Karratha, Onslow and Newman you will work as part of a welcoming and tight knit team. You will work full time and build your knowledge and skills in civil construction and maintenance experience across the Pilbara road network.

Alongside formal training, you’ll learn on-the-job, guided by your supervisor and a network of support who will help you feel welcomed, valued and part of the local community. The attached information sheet provides more information on the role.

We are looking for highly motivated individuals with strong problem-solving skills who love to get involved and take on new challenges and responsibilities. You enjoy working as part of a team and have a genuine interest in road maintenance and construction activities. How does an Apprenticeship work?

As part of the Apprenticeship program, you will:
work full-time with Main Roads while completing a three-year apprenticeship
complete formal training in a Certificate III in Civil Construction
be supported every step of the way, with our friendly Trainee and Apprenticeship Coordinator dedicated to helping you develop and learn at your best.
By the end of the program, you will have completed a Certificate III in Civil Construction and be ready to continue your career with Main Roads, with long-term development opportunities.

In addition to a competitive base salary and 12% superannuation, you may also receive a range of extra benefits and allowances for living and working in the Region.

Working as part of a supportive team as a road worker you’ll work on a road network that covers over 3000km, to inspect, repair and construct both new and existing assets to provide your community with a safe and efficient road network. We’re looking for people with experience in:

Assist in the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, and pathways.
Operate construction equipment safely (e.g., tippers, skid steers, rollers, excavator, flow-cons, water trucks, etc). Some plant and equipment used by Main Roads have weight recommendations and/or safe workload ratings ranging between 120kg and 150kg. Applicants should be able to safely operate equipment within these parameters. Reasonable adjustments will be considered to support applicants in meeting these requirements.

Help with road repairs, resurfacing, and maintenance tasks.
Direct traffic safely around construction sites.
Follow all safety guidelines and work as part of a team to complete projects on time
Keep roadside and parking bays litter free

Do you have solid experience in road construction or maintenance, along with a track record of leading teams, managing sites, or overseeing daily operations then you may be suitable for a Senior Road Worker position where you will:
Supervise crews
Plan and coordinate work on site

Road Workers base hourly rate ranges from $40.93 - $44.98 (depending on relevant experience)
Senior Road Workers base hourly rate ranges from $46.47 - $50.07 (depending on relevant experience)
Your starting hourly rate depends on your relevant experience.
Road Workers and Senior Road Workers are rostered to work Monday to Friday. The roster depends on the time of year; some weekend, night work and call out will be required and is paid at the applicable penalty or overtime rate.
Overnight travel throughout the Pilbara Region may be required as part of the roster.
Main Roads workers in the Pilbara Region are entitled to a District Allowance of $9,299 or $18,598 (if you have a dependent) per annum.
Main Roads workers in the Pilbara Region are entitled to annual power subsidies of up to $3,201 per annum (dependent on the type of your power system).
Road workers accrue a minimum of 5 weeks annual leave, 10 public holidays, 3 additional public service holidays and 15 days personal leave per annum and recreational travel days.
Road Workers are entitled to 13 weeks long service leave after 7 years continuous service.
Annual Leave Loading of 17.5% is paid in December each year.
Training and development opportunities
The salary provided is based on a Monday to Friday roster, with anticipated overtime included. Please note that, as overtime hours and rosters may vary, salary therefore is subject to fluctuation and may change accordingly depending on actual hours worked and operational needs. The exact salary and any applicable allowances will be confirmed with the successful applicant prior to commencement of employment.

The successful candidate will be trade certified with extensive experience on heavy equipment particularly earthmoving plant. They should be a strong problem solver, able to work under pressure and to the highest safety standards. Key responsibilities and duties include:

Performing preventive maintenance on earthmoving equipment
Providing in-field service/repair / diagnosis on equipment
Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic fault finding skills
Working autonomously and self-motivated
Planning work and carrying out parts and equipment requisitions as necessary

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀:
Control and operation of stockyard balance machines, crushers, screens, conveyors and associated fixed plant equipment, including inspection & checking, reporting and recording of operating parameters and other relevant information as required.
All aspects of housekeeping including cleaning of mobile plant, control room and company vehicles, and also including clean-up of spillage within the Plant using both manual and mechanical methods.
Manual handling ability of up to 40kg as the role involves lifting, pushing, pulling, work at heights and others exertions associated with manual roles and requires certain physical demands and exposure to challenging environments
Identify, investigate, report and fix all defects and spillage in assigned areas of the fixed plant, and ensure there is work planned to fix in shutdowns where required.
Assisting maintenance workers with maintenance and servicing of Plant and Equipment during Plant shutdowns and breakdowns.
Completion of any other tasks and activities within your competency as directed by the Site Leadership Team
Compliance with all Company & Site Rules and Regulations as stipulated by the Company and/or the Client
Participate in hazard identification, assessment and control
Providing input and feedback for Plant and Operational improvements.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
The Onslow Sun Chalet Caretaker is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Onslow Sun Chalets, ensuring guests receive excellent service and facilities are maintained to a high standard.

This is a genuinely hands-on caretaker role suited to someone who enjoys staying active, takes pride in presentation and is comfortable turning their hand to a wide range of tasks. From welcoming guests and processing bookings through to making beds, cleaning rooms, maintaining grounds and undertaking minor maintenance, you'll play a direct role in every aspect of the facility's operation. Success in this role requires initiative, a strong work ethic and a willingness to roll up your sleeves whenever needed.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿:
Welcoming guests, responding to enquiries and assisting with bookings and payments.
Taking ownership of the overall presentation of the facility and proactively identifying and addressing housekeeping, maintenance and operational requirements.
Undertaking housekeeping duties including room servicing, bed making, laundry and cleaning.
Maintaining chalet facilities, grounds, pool areas and outdoor spaces to a high standard.
Performing minor maintenance and general upkeep of accommodation facilities.
Coordinating the day-to-day activities of a small number of support staff when required.
Maintaining booking records, inventory and operational documentation.
Supporting workplace health and safety requirements and safe work practices.
Assisting at other Shire accommodation facilities during busy periods or operational requirements.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂
To succeed in this role, you will bring:
Experience in accommodation, hospitality, caravan parks, tourism, cleaning, caretaking or a similar operational environment.
A proactive, self-motivated approach and a willingness to actively participate in housekeeping, cleaning, laundry, grounds maintenance and facility upkeep as a core part of the role.
The initiative to identify priorities, solve problems and take action with minimal supervision.
A high level of personal pride in cleanliness, presentation and guest experience.
Strong customer service and communication skills.
The ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
Experience coordinating staff or contractors is desirable, but extensive leadership experience is not required.
Good administration and record-keeping skills.
Competency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
General handyman and maintenance skills.
Flexibility to work varied hours during peak operational periods.
Current C Class Driver's Licence.
Current First Aid Certificate.
National Police Clearance, or the ability to obtain one.
