At Soul everyone who walks through our door is a Guest.

We don’t have clients, customers, participants, service users or patrons. We don’t have homeless people, street people, addicts, users, winos or hobos. We don’t have patients, cases, schizophrenics, acquired brain injuries, alcoholics or anything else. We just have Guests.

Our community life is very simple because if we are not sure what to do with someone we just treat them like a welcome Guest. And for many vulnerable people that alone is transformative.

Many of our vulnerable Guests are experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity, mental unwellness, addiction and/or social isolation. Most are experiencing more than one of those things. Many have fallen through the gaps of society and societies support services.

Realistically, most of our Guests have been dwelling in that gap for 2yrs, 5yrs, 10yrs, 15yrs, …

Our vision for Newcastle is that no one falls through the gaps! Our vision for Newcastle is that no one has to live in The Gap. Since 2003 Soul Hub has provided an island of hope deep in The Gap for Newcastle’s most vulnerable people.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Sue Prosser.

On Monday 20 July at 4:00pm, we will gather with her husband Rick, her family, and the wider Newcastle community to celebrate a truly remarkable life. And there is so much to celebrate.

For more than a decade, Sue served with extraordinary faithfulness, leadership, generosity, and unwavering commitment to those most in need. Known affectionately as the “Mother of Soul,” she transformed countless lives through her compassion, quiet strength, and fierce advocacy for Newcastle’s most vulnerable people.

Sue’s legacy of unconditional love, open-hearted generosity, and steadfast service will continue to inspire and guide Soul Hub for years to come. While she will be profoundly missed, her light will forever shine through the work, people, and community she helped build at Soul Hub.

On behalf of the Prosser family, we warmly invite you to join us in celebrating Sue’s life at Newcastle City Hall. The celebration will also be live-streamed and can be accessed via the link above.

In lieu of flowers, and at the request of the Prosser family, donations may be made to support the ongoing work of Soul Hub via the link above—a fitting tribute to the mission and community that Sue loved so deeply.

FOCUS ON THE BEACON
On Tuesday’s at Soul Hub we run Conversation through ART.
Today we wanted to share one of our guests hope-inspiring works.

Title: Beacon
Medium: Acrylic and Caulk on canvas

Statement: I’ve been asked by many people where the lighthouse is, whether or not it is nearby, is it a famous lighthouse or a picture they may have seen before, but just my interpretation of that picture, but this beacon is it guess none, and all of the above.

Whilst the picture had influence from pictures I’ve no doubt seen, it is not to be interpreted as a rework of another piece. Nor would it be true to say that it represents any specific landmark, but rather it is a reflection on the difficulties in finding hope, the absolute obvious nature of a beckoning and safe harbour to the observer, can be little more than a dull speck of light on the horizon to those lost at sea.

The turmoil that surrounds us can be made of many things, choices we make, circumstances we find ourselves in, mostly though these constraints are of our own making and design, just as is our ability to recognise a beacon of safe harbour.

The beacon is inside us if we search for it, however, just like hope, it can be easily overwhelmed by the turmoil, focus on the beacon.

NEW GLASSES for 45 Guests
A clearer view, a brighter future; transforming lives one step at a time

A heartfelt thank you to OneSight Australia for recently providing free eye examinations to 45 of our Soul Hub guests. Their dedicated team of optometrists, prescription specialists and administration staff generously gave their time, expertise and compassion to ensure every guest received the care they deserved.

This week, many guests will be proudly collecting their new glasses—bringing clearer vision, greater confidence and improved quality of life. For many, these glasses will make a real difference to everyday living. Our guests, volunteers and staff sincerely thank the entire OneSight Australia team for their generosity, kindness and commitment to our community.

THANK YOU, Girls — You’ve Probably Changed Someone’s Life Today

Recently, two generous twin girls popped into Soul Hub with a jar full of coins and a big-hearted mission.

The girls collected and recycled 1,000 cans, raising $100, which they chose to donate to Soul Hub.

That $100 will provide 22 free guest meals—22 opportunities to offer a hot breakfast, a welcoming smile, and a helping hand to someone doing it tough.
To these amazing young girls: thank you. Your kindness and initiative are making a real difference in our community.
