There was a time when UncleLip thought he was supposed to want a certain kind of life.

A job at Crown. A respectable career. The things society tells you are signs that you’re doing well.

But eventually, he left.

He went to work at a small café, because somewhere inside, he knew he wanted something different.

Something smaller. Something simpler. Something that felt more honest.

That little dream eventually became a small chicken rice shop called G*i Wong.

And looking back, he wouldn’t change a thing.

Because sometimes, the life that looks smaller from the outside can feel so much bigger on the inside. 💛

“Philip, tell me in 60 seconds why you opened a chicken rice restaurant.”

Sometimes, the answer is bigger than chicken rice.

As a kid, Philip L spent most of his childhood in the hospital because of epilepsy. Years later, when he decided to open his own restaurant, finding a place wasn’t easy. As a first-time owner, landlords were sceptical. There were plenty of reasons why it might not work.

But somehow, he ended up exactly where he needed to be.

Right next door to the hospital.

The same place where people once cared for him when he was sick is now just a few steps away from the place where he gets to care for others — one plate of chicken rice at a time.

For us, G*i Wong being next to the hospital was never just a location.

It became a full circle moment.

Sometimes life brings you right back to where you started, just so you can give back in a different way. 💛

How to make UncleLip very upset. 😤

Step 1: Serve Hainanese chicken hot or warm.

Yep. That’s enough.

Traditional Hainanese chicken is meant to be served cool, not hot or warm. That’s how you get that silky skin, tender delicate meat and beautiful collagen layer it’s famous for.

This isn’t UncleLip being dramatic (okay… maybe a little 😏). It’s the traditional way it’s meant to be enjoyed.

An Aussie fella ordered this once and just stared at it. Dry noodles, curry, roast pork on top. He looked genuinely thrown, like “what kind of dish is this?” Unclelip gets it, it’s not a combination you’d expect. But one bite in, he was completely won over: the sweetness in the noodles, the savoriness from the curry, a bit of heat, a bit of creaminess, and then that savory crunch and fattiness from the roast pork hits you. He went from confused to converted in one mouthful, and honestly, that’s most people’s reaction the first time.

Come get confused with us. The first bite always clears it up.

You’d be surprised who walks through our doors, being right next to the hospital. Over the years, UncleLip and the team have shared in every kind of story. Some joyful. Some heartbreaking. Some from people simply looking for a little comfort.

But there’s one story UncleLip knows he’ll carry in his heart forever.

A mum once told him her little boy loved watching the trams go by. UncleLip asked, “Why don’t you bring him over?”

That’s when they learnt the little boy had cancer in his eye.

He was only two, maybe three years old. Just beginning life, yet already carrying something no child should have to bear.

Having faced his own health challenges as a child, UncleLip understood the fear that little boy must have been feeling, and the heartbreak and helplessness his mother was carrying. They prayed with her, right there in the restaurant.

The last UncleLip heard, that little boy is now seven, maybe eight, and thriving.

That story has never left UncleLip. It’s the moment that continues to shape why he continues doing what he does. At G*i Wong, we believe food can nourish the body, but kindness, compassion and prayer can nourish the soul. If we can offer even a little of that to someone who needs it, then we’re exactly where we’re meant to be.

There’s a reason Unclelip doesn’t just buy the cheapest chook he can find. Food is medicine. Not a tagline, an actual rule in his kitchen. Every chicken he uses is free-range, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, fed on a good diet, because whatever the chickens are fed is what ends up on your plate. That’s not a detail he skips on. What you put in your body should heal you, not just fill you up. That’s the whole point of food, and the whole point of what G*i Wong does. Unclelip built this business on one belief: if it’s not good for you, it’s not good enough for his kitchen.
