For more than 150 years, the corner of Russell and Little Collins has seen it all - changing names, owners and reputations like rounds in a prize fight. Back in the 1870s, British and Aussie boxing champ Ebenezer “Abe” Hicken took over, renamed it Hickens Hotel, and started hosting rowdy “glove fights” upstairs in what he called Abe’s Athletic Hall. Judges, journalists and Melbourne’s elite all pa

cked in shoulder to shoulder to watch the punches fly - sometimes with the cops waiting downstairs. Since then, it’s been everything from the King’s Hotel to the Portland Hotel and even the home of Melbourne’s first microbrewery. Now, the name Hickens Hotel returns - a cheeky nod to its wild past and a fresh chapter in this pub’s long, loud, and legendary story.
