After 15 wonderful years, the time has come for us to say goodbye to Mr. Burch....and to you!

We have always been a little camera shy and usually preferred to let the coffee, the food, the cakes and staff do the talking, but for our final post it felt right to finally step out from behind the counter and say thank you properly.

To everyone who came in for a quick coffee, a long brunch, a catch-up with friends, a quiet moment by the window, or made Mr. Burch part of their routine, thank you!
Thank you for your support, your kindness, your loyalty, and for helping turn a little café into something that felt so much bigger.

Over the years, we have watched families grow, children become adults, friendships begin and so many lovely conversations unfold across our tables.
Mr. Burch has been such a huge part of our lives and it is very hard to say goodbye, but the time has come for a new chapter.

We are very happy to be handing Mr. Burch over to a lovely new couple, and we know they will bring their own warmth, energy and ideas to the café.
Please pop in, say hello and give them the same support you gave us over all these years.

This month brings a fresh collection, with Ellie turning her focus to new subjects and scenes.

Slowly simmered with fennel, celery, a hint of chilli and finished with a touch of cream… rich, hearty, and full of flavour in every twirl. 🍝

Good morning from Mr. Burch, who appears to have already claimed the best seat in the house… and is patiently supervising brunch like a true gentleman 🤠

This new special is bringing a little drama (the delicious kind 😅): ➡️ Shiitake mushrooms tossed in XO sauce, stacked with poached eggs on soft brioche, nestled on spinach, and finished with a silky hoisin hollandaise… with a touch of finger fennel for that final flourish. 😋

It’s rich, it’s bold, it’s doing the absolute most… and we’re here for it.

Fresh from the pan at Mr. Burch: pea, mint and zucchini fritters topped with poached eggs, crispy Kaiserfleisch bacon and a drizzle of feta cheese sauce. 😋

It starts off looking quite respectable… bright greens, golden fritters and a couple of poached eggs sitting on top. Then the yolk breaks and suddenly it’s delicious breakfast chaos on the plate. 🍳😋
Minty, savoury, creamy and very satisfying. A very good reason to linger over brunch at Mr Burch in McKinnon. 💚

Potato gnocchi with walnuts, Gorgonzola & sage.

Soft little pillows of gnocchi, tossed with toasted walnuts, creamy Gorgonzola melting into every corner and finished with fragrant sage.
Rich, comforting, and just the right amount of indulgent. 😋

Watching over the plate is a painting of our downstairs room at Mr Burch, beautifully captured by the artist Ringo.

A famous street-food favourite from Durban in South Africa: a loaf of bread hollowed out and filled with delicious curry.
The idea is simple… the bread is the bowl & spoon and both are part of the meal. 👐 🥄🍞
Topped with fresh tomatoes and herbs, served with sour cream and a piece of soft bread for serious scooping. 😋

Peter is on food presentation duty today, proudly introducing his new special… and judging by that smile, he’s quite pleased with it. 😄

What is it, you ask?
Well... it's an omelette filled with butternut pumpkin and feta with creamed garlic spinach, sitting on sourdough toast and muhammara on the side.
Fluffy, savoury, full of flavour and, yes....a bit different 👍 😋

Peter recommends it highly… and he’s keeping a close eye on it until his lunchtime. 😉

This March we’re delighted to welcome Ellie Potter to the walls at Mr. Burch. 🎨🖼

Ellie studied at the Victorian College of the Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art, majoring in Drawing in 1996. Since then, she has worked as a freelance illustrator and continues to share her love of line and form as a drawing teacher at Glen Eira University of the Third Age.
Her work celebrates the quiet power of drawing. Thoughtful, expressive and beautifully observed.🧐 The kind of pieces that invite you to linger a little longer over your coffee. ☕️😋

Yesterday Mr. Burch transformed into a lace trimmed, teacup clinking celebration zone for a very special bride-to-be 💍👑

Queen of the table and future Mrs, she was surrounded by beautiful dresses, big smiles and the kind of laughter that bounces off the walls and refuses to leave.
Our classic high tea towers stood proudly in the middle of it all, stacked like edible architecture. Warm scones, sweet little treats, delicate finger sandwiches… and more than one “just one more” moment. 😋

Today’s special is the Savoury French toast.
Thick slices layered with melted tasty cheese, ham and sweet caramelised onions, then topped with just a little more cheese because restraint felt unnecessary. 😋 🧀

It’s rich, filling and exactly what you want when you’re not in the mood for sweet.

Behind many of the delicious things coming out of our kitchen, there’s a very talented pair of hands (and an even lovelier smile) ♥️

This is Inge, one of our beautiful chefs. In these photos, she’s roasting hazelnuts for our house-made dukkah and hand-dipping cake pops for the kids… and yes, for the grown-ups who just happen to be walking past. 😚🍭

But she’s not only our quiet queen of sweets. If you’ve had breakfast with us recently, there’s a good chance Inge was the one who prepared it. The eggs, the specials, the plates that arrive at your table looking effortless… on her days in the kitchen, she brings such calm care and attention to everything she makes. 👏

We’re not entirely sure who this lady is… but she keeps coming in, skulking about, lifting suspicious forkfuls of our chicken noodle soup, smiling at it like she’s found treasure… and then quietly leaving again. 😮
She’s been spotted more than once. Always near the specials board. Always “just tasting and taking pictures” 👀
If you see her, don’t be alarmed. She seems harmless. Thrives on tender chicken, carrots, celery and comfort.
We’re monitoring the situation. 😜

Always helpful, always kind, always quietly keeping everything ticking along. 🧹

Today he’s holding one of our delicious new specials:

✨ XO mushrooms with creamy scrambled eggs on toast, topped with spicy peanuts and fresh spring onion. 😋

And for anyone wondering… XO doesn’t mean hugs and kisses in this case. It refers to a rich, savoury Asian sauce, traditionally packed with umami goodness. Ours brings depth and that beautiful, more-ish flavour to the mushrooms.

Yum, full of texture, and layered with flavour.
