FORTY
Ok so… this cake humbled me 🫣
When my lovely long term client contacted me a few months ago regarding this cake the first thing I thought was ‘oh hell no’ 😂
I was honest with her and said I hadn’t worked using wafer paper like this before.
She was lovely, as always, and immediately sent through a couple of other designs still using wafer paper but less daunting (for me lol) and labour intensive but I could tell that this design was really what she wanted.
I told her that I would have a play around over that coming weekend just to see if it was even something I could do.
I was pleasantly surprised; it was actually quite a simple process however I knew that if I was to take on the design that it would be at least a few hours of prep work involved.
This is where my humbling journey truly began…..
I got back to my lovely client and told her that I would be happy to take the order
She was thrilled, a price was agreed upon, and I placed an order for the wafer paper sheets as I knew I would need to start preparation and soon. I spent quite a lot of time feeling somewhat guilty that I had overcharged my client, something that as a cake maker I struggle with regularly, but in this even more so.
I purchased 50 wafer paper sheets from my besties
I used 45 of those sheets, cutting 900 x 5cm discs
900. NINE HUNDRED 😳
I did use my trusty hole punch to cut them out (This is ESSENTIAL if you even remotely want to contemplate this design)
Preparation time alone would have easily been 6-7 hours; this is before even cracking an egg, lining a cake tin or turning on my oven.
I am, however, absolutely thrilled with how this turned out; so delicate & pretty yet modern all at once. Most importantly, Vanessa, my lovely loyal client LOVED it.
Would I make this again? Absolutely.
Would I charge the same again with more confidence next time without doubting myself? Absolutely 100%.
Happy 40th
Thank you for trusting me yet again 🥹
