"A Hotel of Uncommon Character"

Begun in 1850, The Royal Oak Hotel has been continually licensed since that time. The Royal Oak Hotel is a 'home away from home' and is one of those rare modern pubs that eschews gaming machines and pay-tv, preferring instead the grand art of conversation and conviviality. The Royal Oak Hotel is a generational place; stories and legends have been made, and continu

e to be made, within its interior. "The Oak", as it is affectionately known, is the reference point for many of Launceston's citizens, past and present.

Grab your mates, find a cosy table and settle in for some good old-fashioned pub entertainment.

A round of dominoes? A game of cards? Something competitive to start a friendly war of mates vs mates...

Put the phones away, order a pint, a glass of wine or something delicious from the kitchen and rediscover the fine art of sitting around a table and actually playing together.

We’ve got the tables. You bring your best poker face.

šŸ’œ A cool-climate classic šŸ’œ

Tasmania does Shiraz a little differently.

Havilah Shiraz is everything we love about cool-climate winemaking. Grown in the Coal River Valley and crafted with a light touch, it showcases vibrant blue fruits, distinctive white pepper spice and a bright line of fresh acidity that keeps every sip lively and elegant.

Matured for 12 months in seasoned oak and bottled without fining or filtration, it's a wine that lets the vineyard do the talking.

This is Shiraz with finesse. Fresh, savoury and beautifully balanced.

Perfect alongside our slow-cooked lamb shoulder, a juicy Tasmanian steak or simply enjoyed with great company.

Come and discover one of Tasmania's standout reds.

Tonight // Friyay //JOHN & JAI

Two of Launceston’s most beloved musos, two good mates and a stack of unexpected, jaunty tunes played in ways you might not have heard before.

John brings the guitar chops and gritty rock vocals. Jai steps away from the drum kit and onto the mysterious wooden box, bringing the beats and the softer side. Together, their harmonies are seriously good.

Expect plenty of ā€œI LOVE this songā€ moments, some unexpected choices and a very easy Friday night in the Front Bar.

John brings the dad jokes. Jai brings the groans.

Good food deserves a good bottle. Or a good glass.

Our seasonal menu is built for exactly the kind of eating we like at The Oak: generous pub favourites alongside dishes that make the most of what’s good right now. Come in for a parmi, settle in over steak frites, order a few things for the table or make an evening of it.

Then there’s the wine list.

We’ve put together a broad, curious list that goes well beyond the standard pub offering, with plenty of Tasmanian bottles alongside some excellent mainland Australian producers. Sparkling, riesling, pinot gris, chardonnay, rosĆ©, pinot noir, shiraz, cabernet and a few less predictable things in between.

You’ll find Tassie names including Holm Oak, Pressing Matters, Freycinet, Stoney Rise, Invercarron and Dr Edge on the boards, with plenty available by the glass if committing to a bottle feels overly ambitious for a Tuesday.

Come hungry. Have a look at the boards. Ask us what’s drinking well. Stay for another glass. šŸ· šŸ¾ šŸ„‚ šŸ‡ šŸ§€ šŸ«’ šŸ½ļø šŸ„–
