Good morning.
Today marks Kanro (寒露), the “Cold Dew,” one of the 24 seasonal divisions of the traditional Japanese calendar.
It is the time of year when the mornings and evenings become noticeably cooler, and the dew resting on the grasses and plants begins to feel cold.
The air becomes crisp and clear, bringing many beautiful autumn days. The moon shines brightly in the night sky, autumn colours begin to appear in the mountains, and migratory birds such as wild geese arrive from the north. Chrysanthemums also begin to bloom as autumn gradually deepens.
Chestnuts, persimmons and mushrooms are among the seasonal foods coming into their best time.
Here in Australia, where the seasons are reversed, we are now entering Seimei (清明), “Clear and Bright,” the seasonal period associated with the freshness and renewal of spring in Japan.
It is always fascinating to experience the rhythm of the seasons from the opposite side of the world.
Wishing you a beautiful day.
