Some things feel as though they were always meant to find their place.

Hanging above the lounge at The Kingfisher is our Azure Kingfisher, painted in oils by Tasmanian artist Averill Lawler Yuile.

The story of this beautiful bird begins on Tasmania’s wild Northwest Coast, where photographer Dean L Hohn captured the original image on the Leven River.

Azure Kingfishers are fast, elusive and rarely inclined to sit still for their portrait. Dean’s photograph is the result of extraordinary patience and a lifelong fascination with birds that began when he was just seven years old.

From that fleeting moment on the river, Averill created something lasting.

Her painting captures the brilliant colour, delicacy and unmistakable presence of the bird that inspired our name and now, seeing it illuminated in its home at The Kingfisher, it feels even more special.

A beautiful meeting of place, patience and artistry.
