I’m not sure what the best part about owning a bar is.

Is it the drinks you get to try?
The experiences you have?
The ridiculous stories you collect along the way?
Or, more importantly, the people you meet?

This week summed it up pretty well.

One mate dropped in with a bottle of Savaterre Chardonnay — absolutely beautiful and bloody delicious.

Then another mate casually rocks up with his dad’s brand-new McLaren Artura. Naturally, I had to have a closer look. What an absolutely phenomenal machine.

Wine and McLarens are pretty bloody good… but neither is actually the best part.

The best thing about owning The Black Sheep has been the people who’ve walked through the door and somehow become mates.

Seven years of beers, wines, laughs, arguments, celebrations, ridiculous nights, new friendships and memories I never would have had otherwise.

So a genuine shout-out to everyone who’s come into my life because of this little bar.

I appreciate each and every one of you.

Although, for the record… a nice Chardonnay and a McLaren certainly don’t hurt.

🍺 A FEW NEW BEERS HAVE LANDED… INCLUDING ONE THAT HASN’T ACTUALLY LANDED YET. 👀

Got lucky on the delivery run this week and managed to sneak in something a little early…

☀️ Bojak Brewing – Sunray Haze
A 4.5% hazy Pacific Ale that isn’t officially released until next week. We were lucky enough to get some early, so you can try it at the Black Sheep before the official release.

🍻 Banks Brewing – Practice Beer
5.2% Hazy Pale Ale. Soft, juicy and very easy drinking.

🍫 Banks Brewing – That’s Grand
12% Barrel Aged Imperial Pastry Stout, conditioned for 3 years in maple whiskey barrels. An absolute weapon.

🥛 Hargreaves Hill – Babooshka Vanilla Milk Stout
6% Vanilla Milk Stout. Rich, creamy, roasty and loaded with vanilla.

Four cracking Victorian beers — from an easy 4.5% Pacific Ale right through to a ridiculous 12% barrel-aged stout.

And if you want to get your hands on Sunray before everyone else, we’ve got it now. ☀️🍺

🍺 TWO NEW BEERS ON TAP TODAY 🍺

A couple of absolute crackers have just landed at The Black Sheep.

🌴 Sub Tropical Hazy IPA – 7.1%
A collab between Bridge Road Brewers x Good Land Brewing Co. Juicy, hazy, tropical and packing plenty of flavour. At 7.1%, it’s got a little bit of sneaky about it too. 😏

🍫 Holgate Temptress Chocolate Porter – 6.0%
And this one gets the hand pump treatment. Rich, smooth, chocolatey porter from Holgate, served the old-school way. If you’ve never had a beer off a hand pump, this is a bloody good place to start.

Two very different beers.
Two very good reasons to pop in for a pint.

🎤 COMEDY KICKS OFF IN 15 MINUTES! 🎤

Look who’s rolled into The Black Sheep Hawthorn tonight… the very bloody funny Oliver Hunter.

And before anyone sends me an angry DM — I asked Oliver personally if I could say this:

Oliver’s been doing comedy for more than a decade, has performed around Australia and in the US, appeared on Dylan Alcott’s ListenAble podcast, and this year brought It’s All Good to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He’s also a disability advocate, consultant, keynote speaker and podcast host. (Melbourne International Comedy Festival⁠)

His own style probably sums him up best: loveable, laconic, a little dark, and very happy to take the p**s out of life in a wheelchair. (The Wheeler Centre⁠)

Late-night treat for Maggie and me 🐕🍰

I wanted something sweet. Maggie just wanted a walk. So we compromised… and both got exactly what we wanted. 😂

Tonight’s destination: Siora for a tiramisu. A little late-night wander through Auburn Village, dessert for me, extra sniffing time for Maggie. Win-win.

Two crowd favourites are back on tap! 🍻

If you’ve been waiting for these, today’s your day.

🍺 Bridge Road Beechworth Pale Ale – one of Australia’s true craft beer classics. Crisp, balanced and ridiculously easy to drink.

🍺 Bojak Calypso Hazy IPA – juicy, tropical and packed with hop character. If hazies are your thing, this one is hard to beat.

The best part? Both beers ranked in the GABS Hottest 100 last year, so they’ve already got plenty of fans.

Pouring now is Holgate Traditional ESB on draught – a classic English-style Extra Special Bitter that’s packed with flavour. Expect rich caramel and toasted biscuit malt, subtle toffee sweetness, a gentle earthy hop bitterness, and a smooth, balanced finish that makes it incredibly easy to drink.

We’ve got some exciting beers arriving this weekend, so we need to clear this keg to make room.

One of the rarest beer experiences in Melbourne… 🍺

It’s not something you’ll find in many bars around Melbourne. In fact, hand pumps have become a bit of a hidden treasure for beer lovers, with only a handful of venues still pouring beer this way.
