Well… after watching Spotlight, it is another reminder that we really need to talk about our food more.
Although, if you've been following OrganicBox for a while, you'll know we've actually been talking about this for more than 17 years.
And after watching tonight's 7NEWS Spotlight investigation into ultra-processed food, that conversation feels more important than ever.
One statistic really stood out:
Ultra-processed food has been associated with more than 30 different health conditions.
That's pretty confronting.
But another comment on the program stuck with us, that for many people, ultra-processed food is an option because it's cheap.
And we understand that. The cost of feeding a family matters, especially right now.
Certified Organic food can certainly look more expensive when you compare individual prices on a shelf.
But perhaps we've been taught to look at the cost of food in the wrong way.
What are we actually getting for our money?
Not what the front of the packet suggests we're getting.
Not what clever words, beautiful pictures or health claims make us feel like we're buying.
What are we ACTUALLY eating?
Where did it come from?
How was it grown?
How was it produced?
What's been added to it?
And who is checking the claims?
For more than 17 years, we've been encouraging South Australian families to ask those questions.
It's one of the reasons we're so passionate about Certified Organic.
Certification doesn't automatically mean something isn't processed. There are Certified Organic processed foods too, and we should still read ingredient labels.
But certification gives us something incredibly important: standards, auditing and traceability behind the organic claim.
Personally, our own food habits have changed many many years ago, longer than those 17 years.
We don't even visit a supermarket anymore, and it is an easy choice.
It can be for you too!!
Your OrganicBox arrives filled with fresh Certified Organic fruit and vegetables. We even have our OrganicBox food system that provides you with 5-6 dinners a week, that you can cook from scratch with recipes provided on our website.
We can supply your certified organic fruit, veggies, grocery lines, meats, dairy, bread, toiletries, and we even have toilet paper!!!
And for us, there is nothing better than eating this way as we feel so much better!!! In fact is has changed our lives (for those that know my story).
We find good-quality, nourishing food satisfying. It's not necessarily about having more food, it's about choosing better food.
There's also something wonderfully uncomplicated about opening an OrganicBox and seeing:
🥕 Carrots.
🥦 Broccoli.
🍎 Apples.
🥬 Greens.
🍊 Oranges.
Food that still looks like food.
A carrot doesn't need a health claim splashed across the front of it.
So yes, Certified Organic food may sometimes cost more.
Organic farmers have rigorous standards to meet. Certification, auditing and traceability cost money. Producing food without relying on many of the conventional farming inputs takes commitment.
But after tonight's program, perhaps the question isn't simply:
“What's the cheapest food I can buy?”
Perhaps it's:
“What am I actually getting for my money, and what am I putting into my body?”
For 17+ years, we've believed that knowing where your food comes from matters.
Today, we believe it more strongly than ever.
This isn't about being perfect. It's not about saying you can never open another packet.
It's about making better choices, more often.
🌱 Eat more real food.
🌱 Cook with real ingredients.
🌱 Read the labels.
🌱 Waste less.
🌱 Ask questions.
🌱 Know where your food comes from.
🌱 And when you choose organic, look for certification.
Because in a world where our food is becoming increasingly processed and increasingly complicated, perhaps getting back to basics has never been more important.
REAL FOOD. REAL HEALTH. BETTER CHOICES.
It's been our mission for more than 17 years, and we are not about to stop now. 💚
