Located near the Caloundra turnoff, Steve Irwin Drive, Glenview this old postcard photo is of the iconic Rustic Cabin.
The Rustic Cabin was situated on the Glass House Mountains Road, previously called the Bruce Highway and was built in 1923 by Mr Jess Samuel D. Johnson, a Master Builder. He and his wife, Daisy Emma Johnson ran the tea house which was originally situated 100 meters further north of its present location.
The Rustic Cabin is on a Qld. Forestry Lease, R 108 Bribie. In 1942 the State Government moved the cabin to the present site at 2859 Steve irwin Way, Glenview.
Daisy had one daughter Doris Johnson, who drowned near the cabin when she was 10 years of age, 8 February 1937 and was buried in the Mooloolah Cemetery across the road.
Mr Johnson died 21 March 1948, aged 72 years. Daisy carried on the business until her death, 27 January 1979, aged 85 years. She was buried next to her daughter and husband's graves at Mooloolah Cemetery.
The Jowarra Interpretive Forest Walk, located near the Rustic Cabin at the Caloundra Bruce Highway roundabout, was officially inspected and opened during March 1995 by the Minister for Primary Industries, Mr Ed Casey.
The walk was built to ensure minimal impact on the environment. The area had been set aside for special management by the Department of Primary Industries in 1936. 1.7 kilometres of graded walking tracks, bridges and viewing platforms make up the Forest walk.
Sue Joseph of Bassett Barks Pty Ltd (one time Mooloolah resident and ex-employee of the Rustic Cabin) purchased the iconic Rustic Cabin, during August 2010 and began extensive renovations throughout 2010 and 2011, to restore the building, which had been badly damaged by white ants.
Owner Sue Joseph, renamed the renovated café/restaurant, Daisy’s Place.
The renovation was completed by the end of July 2011.
Ms Joseph turned Daisy Johnson’s upstairs living quarters into a private dining setting and compiled a library and reading area.
There is a 7.5 km walk through the adjoining forest that joins the cabin. Daisy was born in London in 1893 and moved to the Mooloolah district in 1918.
The restaurant closed for a while while road works progressed and is now known as That Pizza Guy HQ rocking out Woodfired pizza’s
