TOWN MEETING NOTES RE LANDSLIDE
Hey everyone,
Here is some information regarding the landslide at Bogong Village from the meeting Wed night.

*The landslide is not actually a landslide, it's a landstay, meaning that a normal slide, all the debris would come down and would be moved away. In this case, the landslide has only partially come down, making it a very slow process to clear debris safely as any movement could cause the slip to complete its journey.
*The source or fault of the slip has not yet been found
*Three bore holes are to be drilled from the top next week to discover more about where the slide started, if they can manually move/ encourage it to move safely and to understand better the geology of the area
*From next week, long reach excavators will be able to access the debris from both sides as emergency access tracks have now been formalised.
*Next week will also see the arrival of a large remote controlled bulldozer from the Bendigo Mining area, this means that the middle of the debris can be tackled safely with no threat to human life
* They cannot dig from the top as it is too unstable
*They have an unlimited budget to remove, make safe the side area and to reopen the road. As soon as the slide moves correctly, they will be able to regain access more quickly.
*with access from both sides to remove debris, the work will continue, but more quickly
*Both the ICC and DoT have admitted that the process has been frustatingly slow and perhaps the required communication to the community was also not fast enough
*Expectation that the road should be open to one lane access by end Feb/March and if they have the possibility to open it sooner, they will absolutely do that.
*Why can't we use dynamite to blow it up? There are tunnels from agl and the comms line running through the area which would be compromised. Also the debris they are trying to remove instead of letting it go into the Bogong Village exclusion zone which also has 3 houses and some sheds in it. There is also a creek that should not be contaminated because the debris which is not made up of useful material will make its way into Lake Guy and cause problems of its own within the Hydro Electrical Scheme.
*Why is there no funding for businesses? The goverment is currently in caretaker mode with the election happening next weekend, once the election has occured, the funding will be allocated. Both government parties are well across the requirements, the potential change of government will not affect the removal of the landslide
*What is being done for future slides? The whole BHP road has been assessed for further risk areas and the assessment presented to governement.
*It should be noted that whilst a majority of businesses choose to open only in winter, the businesses that open all year round and support the green season, have now lost 2 summers and 2 winters in 3 years. Please consider them when refering guests, friends and family to the mountain. Support them as best you can.
*Why were none of the events moved to Mount Beauty? Ignition and Feastival could both have been moved into the valley for restructuring and support of Valley Business. This was raised after the meeting and I was not able to get an answer for this.
*Dani Sheean is from Gateway, locally based and is able to offer assistance and support to business and people, also to help guide through funding requests when it becomes available.
*Hopefully some of this information is helpful and again, the process is painfully slow, but for those that want more current up to date information, the ICC will be providing links to more regular communication through the Alpine Shire.

I can't put into words what it has meant to me, the last 11 years.

To watch and be part of people's magical memories, to watch babies grow into little people, young humans grow into adults and laugh lines grow into deep wrinkles and grey hair. I've had the honor of nurturing these moments over the years and to become more than just acquaintances, but friends and extended family.

I've watched families grow, separate, laugh, cry, get married, divorced, I've been touched by your love, your sadness, your proud moments, I've been a part of your children, grandchildren and even great great grandchildren memories.

It has been a journey as rewarding as it has been difficult, and at times, the pressure has exploded in ways that not only hurt myself, but also people around me.

So thank you, so very much to the people, my guests, my family, my friends, my staff over the years, for continuing to enable me to create a place where laughter, tears, champagne at 10am and brownies at 11pm were socially acceptable. For growing with us as we made changes to make milch the wonderful experience it has been for so long. For forgiving my tired heart, my stubborn head and for supporting me along this journey when life got rocky.

11 years....
