Amma’s got your back

At the heart of Colombo Social is Shiranie, Shaun’s mum (or Amma). Influenced by a childhood in Batticaloa (on Sri Lanka’s beautiful East Coast), years spent in Colombo, and more than 40 years in Sydney, Shiranie’s culinary touch can be felt in every dish on our menu.

Shiranie draws on generations of women before her, to not only add love to the menu, but also to the staff and every guest who walks through our doors. The true matriarch of the Plate It Forward family, you can feel her kindness, compassion and empathy in her mission to ensure nobody goes hungry.

Shiranie spent countless hours in the kitchen with our team, teaching them the little things you can’t write in a recipe. How it should smell, how it should feel, when to add more curry leaves and when to trust your instincts.

The result? Food that feels like home, even if it’s your first time here.

Rustic, hearty and full of flavour, with fresh coconut, red onion, curry leaves and green chilli. Tear it by hand, dip it into sambol and eat it while it’s still warm and soft.

Introducing Head Chef Shashank Achuta at Colombo Social.

Born and raised in Bangalore, his cooking is shaped by South Indian home kitchens, regional, layered, and built on spice used with intention, not excess. It’s a way of cooking deeply connected to place, where flavour is developed slowly and every element has a role.

Since moving to Sydney, he’s developed a style that respects those foundations while allowing them to evolve in a modern Australian context. His work has always been thoughtful and personal, from Sydney Tiffin Room to appearances on The Cook Up with Adam Liaw.

Recognised as Good Food Guide Young Chef of the Year 2024, and named one of NSW’s most influential Indian Australians, he brings both perspective and quiet confidence to the kitchen.

At Colombo, he’s leading the next chapter of the menu, bringing new ideas while staying grounded in where it all comes from.

Our new menu refresh lands today. A real labour of love shaped by Shaun, his mum Shiranie, and our new head chef Shashank Achuta, bringing new ideas into the mix while staying true to the flavours Colombo was built on.

It’s still the same heart. Sri Lankan home cooking at its core, with an Inner West edge. Warm, generous, a little loud, where plates are made to share and stories are part of the table.

And as always, purpose matters. Colombo Social continues to create opportunities for people who need it most, using food to bring people together and give back to the community.

This month's menu brings papadums with date + lime pickle, stuffed potato tel dala buns and king prawn vadai with onion achcharu to start.
