🏨 HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED ABOUT THE OLD GEORGE & DRAGON HOTEL AT EAST MAITLAND?

If you’ve travelled along Melbourne Street at East Maitland, you may have driven past this historic building and wondered what its story was.

The George & Dragon Hotel has a fascinating history stretching back to 1837, making it one of the early hotels established in the East Maitland area.

📍 48–50 Melbourne Street, East Maitland

The hotel was established by George Furber, a publican who was already involved in the local hotel trade. Before opening the George & Dragon, Furber had been associated with the Golden Fleece Inn at East Maitland.

When the George & Dragon opened its doors in 1837, it was a substantial establishment for its time.

By 1841, the property was described as a brick building containing nine rooms, along with a cellar and extensive outbuildings, including a large stable, gig house and shed.

Like many old Australian hotels, the George & Dragon saw plenty of publicans come and go over the years. Among the names recorded in connection with the hotel are William Benjamin Johnston Green, William Burgess, John Bellamy, James Woodham and Michael Rohan.

And there’s an interesting connection to Australian political history.

🇦🇺 In 1890, future Australian Prime Minister Edmund Barton was reported to have dined at the George & Dragon while visiting Maitland.

As the years passed, the hotel became part of the Tooth & Co. network, with the company acquiring the property in 1926.

The George & Dragon continued operating as a licensed hotel for many more years before finally closing as a hotel in 1977.

But thankfully, the building itself survived.

Today, the historic property is known as The Old George and Dragon, giving us a chance to look back at almost two centuries of East Maitland history.

Think about that for a moment — since 1837, this building has witnessed generations of local residents, travellers, publicans and changing streetscapes.

From the days of horse-drawn transport and colonial inns to the modern streets of East Maitland, the old George & Dragon has remained part of the local landscape.

Yesterday we had a great day at the OG hosting a charity day for ride for sick kids with Pete Hodgson and his team. Money for entry was for the charity and the OG and our amazing suppliers put up some great prizes for the 100 clubs to raise extra funds.

Thanks also goes out to Paul Humphreys who entertained the crowd with great music and humour.

After getting in from a very busy week it’s lovely to read this and a great story in Fridays Mercury. We are proud to support everything as local as possible.

Venue Spotlight: The Old George and Dragon ✨

Step inside one of Maitland’s oldest landmarks, The Old George and Dragon in East Maitland.

We are back with an OG spotlight next week these are done in our limited spare time but we love highlighting great places in our town and our suppliers.
