🌿 Floravilla Friday 🌿
A journey back to 1996… and back 120 million years 🌱
Hidden within the lush green world we call The Daintree lies a living story older than imagination… and Betty Hinton set out to capture it one brushstroke at a time. 🎨
Betty’s remarkable project “Ancient and Primitive Flowering Plants of Australia” documented plants that have survived against all odds through the millennia — a living connection to the ancient Gondwana rainforests.
Of the 21 flowering plant families featured in the project, an incredible 16 can be found right here between the Daintree and Bloomfield Rivers, with many concentrated around the Cape Tribulation rainforest. How lucky are we to walk amongst these ancient treasures every day? 🌿
These plants aren’t just beautiful — some have fossil records dating back over 40 million years, while others have changed so little over time they give scientists a glimpse into Earth’s ancient past.
In 1996, Betty demonstrated her watercolour work at Cairns Regional Gallery, alongside the exhibition celebrating legendary botanical artist Ellis Rowan. Betty was described as gaining international recognition for her Australian flora artwork — a wonderful honour amongst botanical art history.
Betty’s vision was simple but extraordinary:
✨ Through art, create a realistic record of plants that have survived through time. ✨
Today at Daintree Floravilla Ice Creamery & Art Gallery, that same love of nature, art and rainforest continues. Come wander the gardens, enjoy an ice cream, and remember… you’re not just visiting a rainforest — you’re stepping into a living museum millions of years in the making. 🌿🍦
