Today we remember. We honour. We commit.

On National Sorry Day, we pause to reflect on the strength and resilience of the Stolen Generations and acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.

While apologies recognise past wrongs, meaningful change requires ongoing, concrete action.

Apologies must be accompanied by sustained efforts to address imbalance - words translated into tangible improvements in the lives of First Nations peoples.

◾Over-Representation in Child Protection: As of September 2025, 4.5% of First Nations children were on care and protection orders, unchanged from the same time last year. In contrast, the rate for non-Indigenous children declined from 0.5 to 0.4% during this period. (DCJ)

◾Family Violence: In 2023-24, Indigenous women aged 15 and over were 27 times more likely to be hospitalised due to family violence than non-Indigenous women. (AIHW)

◾Child Safety Concerns: Indigenous children are over-represented in areas where child safety and security are compromised, experiencing higher rates of hospitalisations and deaths due to injury compared to their non-Indigenous peers.

These figures underscore the necessity for systemic reforms and community-led initiatives.

For Aboriginal children and young people, sorry means listening, and action toward systemic change.

Napping in the mushrooms, not used to all the hard work after a week off 🍄‍🟫

I’m a one woman show at the moment, and have just had to take another week off after going down like Chuck Norris for the second time in a matter of months.

Not like me, I very seldom fall ill so I think my body is telling me I’m trying to do too much. Probably some productivity wounding in there somewhere, if you’re not doing everything you’re not worthy! What a load of rot… who taught us that??

Annnnywayyyy, I’m learning as I go with this whole hospo cafe operator game- and can see I need to pivot so I don’t end up with hungry customers if break my bum rollerblading or something lol, or heaven forbid go on an actual holiday at some point in life 😂

I’m in the process of working out how to stabilise for sustainability, rather than pushing myself to exhaustion and inevitable illness.

Oh what a learning curve, but I’m here for it.

To any customers who came through this week and missed out on coffee or lunch, please accept my apology and my gratitude for your patience while I learn.

This week I’ve had the fortune of swapping stories with the golden hearted gentlemen of the Gooboora Men’s Group, powering them with caffeine along the way for their cultural activities and exploration of self ☕️

Their sense of brotherhood is visceral, here is a message from one of their members, :

“The Goobara mens group including myself have been enjoying our reconnection to Country and our healing and learning this week.

We challenge oursleves through our own mental trauma and life experiences to become better men in our communities.

We also had the pleasure of enjoying some downtime with the beautiful soul Jess at Songlines Bush Cafe, helping us every day with a coffee and a yarn each morning, bearing witness to our journey into the mind”.

True warriors of the heart, learning how to heal their emotional traumas and lead other men to do the same, breaking cycles and becoming leaders. Any community would be lucky to have them.
