Day 3 - Rome

Our first stop was the Catacombs at the Cappuchini followed by some time at Palazzo Barbernini. As both places were around the corner from our hotel, we were able to dash back, get dressed and walk to La Menagere for our brunch/lunch reservation.

I really enjoyed this place, it was beautiful to look at, loads of creativity with food and decor as well as delicious 😋 food to choose from.

Back to the room for a rest before we head out again, walking to Campo de Fiori. This is our meeting place for a ghosts and legends of Rome night tour.
Take away pizza and suppli was an easy and delicious option to enjoy by a fountain in the piazza.

The tour exceeded our expectations, so much history and not as scary as I was expecting.

The food in Rome and Italy 🇮🇹 so far has not missed a beat!

Day 2 in Rome ❤️

We started with 2 hours at Villa Borghese, an amazing gallery with a lot of Bernini sculptures. We love this place and enjoyed sharing it with Evie.

Lemon sorbet for a snack on a warm Spring day followed by lunch at Ginger for freshly squeezed juice, good coffee ☕️ and a delicious salad.

We later walked to Palazzo Pamphilj which was also fabulous with art, sculptures and history.

Dinner in the Trastevere district for fabulous deep fried artichoke, fava beans with Pecorino cheese and excellent pasta.

A lovely walk home watching the moon rise over the Tiber River and the Vatican in the background.

Super amazing day ❤️

Day 1 of Rome

We drove from Pompei to Naples airport to drop off our hire car, which Evie lovingly called Stamford. 😆

We jumped on a high speed train 🚅 in Executive class, which was super fun as there are 8 leather seats in the entire carriage. Lunch and drinks are included as well as the use of the FrecciaLounge which was equipped with food, drinks and coffee.

We arrived in Rome at around 2pm, checked in and raced out the door to see a few sites.

We like to stay on Via Tritone, which is around the corner from the Trevi fountain ⛲️ and The Pantheon.

Lunch was a fabulous panini with prosciutto at Ginger, and they served excellent coffee ☕️.

We walked to Piazza Navona, The Pantheon 🏛 and the Trevi fountain. We arrived on Friday, 1 May which was Italy's Labour Day public holiday, so most of the sites were packed but equally a great vibe.

Dinner was at a small but fantastic restaurant called PinsItaly. They made some of the best pizzas we have had and their suppli (similar to arancini) were delicious 😋

A gelato in Piazza Novana and off to bed ready for a day of exploring.

Once again, apologies for the break between posts!

Pompei!!!

We left Tivoli and drove 2.5 hours to the town of Pompei, our hotel was just a short walk to the ruins of Pompeii.

The food here was amazing of course, you might notice the pizza 🍕 has a thicker crust than up north. It's wonderful how each region in Italy 🇮🇹 have slightly different cuisines 😋

The Roof top bar at our hotel had fabulous views of Mt Vesuvius and the town.

We had a day tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum with an archaeologist, which Evie was ecstatic about!

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and took our small group to see some amazing structures still in fantastic condition.

The next day was a little rainy 🌧 so we decided to head back to Pompeii for the morning and explore a few other parts of the ruins and just get lost amongst it. So much fun!

The gnocchi, pasta, pizza 🍕 and cocktails 🍸 were excellent, even our breakfast each morning was fabulous 👌 just like all our other hotels.

Pompeii is worth doing with a guide. Craig and I were here in 2008 and we just walked through ourselves. We definitely learnt a lot more this time.

Most people stay in Rome and do a day trip to Pompeii or they stay in Sorrento and catch the train in. Give Pompei a go, it is a beautiful town and worth staying a few nights.

A huge thank you to all my family and friends for all my birthday phone calls, messages, texts, and gifts last week 🎁 ❤️

I had a lovely day and evening with my family, feeling spoilt after such an epic, wonderful adventure together ❤️

51 ain't so bad, but I am still tired of waking up and not being in Italy with my coffee ☕️ and cornetto 🥐

After our perfect stay in Montepulciano, we drove an few hours south to Tivoli.

Tivoli is perched high on a mountain about an hour drive inland from Rome. This town is older than Rome, it is also where Hadrian had his summer ☀️ palace.

Once again, we stayed in a palazzo, a wonderful guest house run by an excellent host, Manuel.

We had a delicious dinner followed by a walk to the lookout where you could see the city lights of Rome.

A scrummy gelato from Glam 😋 and a sit in the park watching the fountains ⛲️ in the evening light.

The next morning, we set off to Villa d'Este, a beautiful villa with fountains and waterfalls which were 100% potable water! The views were beautiful from here as well.

Craig and I stayed in Tivoli 18 years ago for one night as a stopover prior to arriving in Sorrento.
This time, we also used it as a break in the long journey on our way to Pompei. We have now decided this town deserves a longer stay next time.

Before we hit the road, we had a quick look through their daily food market. Most of you know how much I love artichokes and travelling through Italy 🇮🇹 in Spring is the perfect time to enjoy them fresh, check out the size of the artichoke tower!!

Apologies for the big break between posts! Getting back to reality is a real struggle! 🥺

We finally made it to our destination, my favourite town in Italy, Montepulciano 💕

Another medieval town high up on a mountain.

This is our 2nd visit to this gorgeous town. Our hotel was a B&B in an old palazzo which was around 300 years old 😳 our view from our balcony was to die for!

We enjoyed bistecca Fiorentina, which is a T-bone steak from the Chiania cattle breed. This breed is over 2000 years old, the Romans used them for pulling chariots and farming. This breed of cattle is so big, our T-bone was 1.8kg!!! They are served in the Middle of the table to share. It was tender and delicious 😋 cooked to perfection 👌

We were lucky enough to see The first of many flag throwing practices as well as the traditional medieval procession. This is in lead up to one of Montepulciano's barrel race that is on in August. It is lovely to see locals keeping their traditions.

The food was wonderful constantly in every restaurant.
Pasta is always made from hand, you will never receive packet pasta in Italy 🇮🇹 the ragu is always cooked slowly and with care.

We stayed for 3 nights, which was over our ANZAC day, 25 April. This date is also special for Italy, it is their Liberation Day, when Italy was liberated from German occupation in WWII.

My heart is still in Montepulciano ❤️💔😢 a place that is so special to me.

This is a big one!!

We absolutely love Tuscany and couldn't wait to share it with our daughter, Evie.

We left Pisa and drove 1.5 hours to Florence, where we had the most beautiful apartment in the Santa Croce district for 5 nights.

The food was insanely wonderful, they shave truffles on everything like it is Parmesan cheese! I was in heaven ❤️🇮🇹

We visited the Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia Gallery, entered Palazzo's owned by the Medici family. Walked the Vasari Corridor, over the Ponte Vecchio, and visited the final resting place of Michael Angelo and Galileo.

This is the city where the Renaissance began, there was so much history of how and when it all started.

One piece of food history I loved, Pisa wanted to take over Florence and one of their strategies was to stop the transportation of salt into Florence as they knew this was a major ingredient when making bread 🍞. The Florentines didn't let it bother them, so they made bread without salt.
Whenever we ate bread in Florence, you can taste there is no salt, they have continued the same recipe hundreds of years on.

When we left Florence, we drove to San Gimignano which is just over 30 minutes away. Another lovely medieval town high on a mountain. We enjoyed a morning tea of coffee and pastries before exploring.

A 45 minute drive further south, we stopped in at Siena. We relaxed in the Tuscan Sun 🌞 in the Campo, the is where the bare back horse race happens once a year. We also climbed old church ruins that is now a Vista point.
Lunch was one huge slice of pizza 🍕 while watching the world around us go about its business.

After Siena, we drove to my favourite town of all, Montepulciano. This place is so special to us, I will do another post for this.

The people

We said goodbye to Parma and drove 1.5 hours to La Spezia in Cinque Terre.

Our stay was fantastic! There are 5 towns on the Ligurian Coast, Riomaggiore, Vernazza, Manarola, Monterosso and Corniglia.

Not long after we arrived, we caught a train to Riomaggiore for dinner, the seafood in Cinque Terre is unbelievable 👌 😋

The next day we decided to start from the furthest town and make our way back. Monterosso is the furthest and when we arrived, there was a gorgeous beach with umbrellas and banana chairs. I made a vow that we would be back the next morning to chill by the ocean.

We explored each town but skipped Corniglia as it requires a bus as it is the only town out of the 5 that is on top of a high mountain.

We got to Manarola, I had heard of a restaurant perched high on a mountain with great views and even better lobster 🦞 pasta. Trattoria di Billy did not disappoint and the hike was worth it.
We couldn't believe we got a front row table without booking 😳 yum, just yum!

The next day we relaxed for around 5 hours by the sea and soaked in the Ligurian sun 🌞
Craig and Evie jumped in the water, it was way too cold for me. I went in as far as my knees.

Lunch was a spectacular buffalo 🐃 buratta pizza 🍕 it absolutely exceeded our expectations!!

After a short rest back at our hotel, we caught a train and bus to Corniglia for dinner. We were so high up, the views were fabulous 👌
Cinque Terre specialises in pesto, so their pesto pasta is a must if you are here.

On check out day, we drove south to Pisa to see the leaning tower, which Evie hasn't seen yet.
We checked out all buildings in the area.

Another hour and a half inland to Florence for our 5 night stay.

I will need to post separately as it was just too amazing and the food.

Cinque Terre is somewhere I would definitely go back to ❤️
