Check out this little Marans pullet! 🐔

She came from a mixed Marans pen, and I’m loving watching her grow out.

I’m definitely a straight-run kind of girl. I enjoy running colours from within the same colour family together—for example, black/blue/splash/white or buff/gold/reds.

This little girl came from a Black Tailed Red Marans rooster over Black Tailed Red Marans, Blue Copper Marans and Black Copper Marans hens.

And let me tell you… out of that dozen eggs, no two chicks looked the same! 😂

That’s the fun of buying eggs from a mixed pen—you never quite know what you’re going to get, and watching them feather out is always interesting.

I can’t wait to see what colour eggs she lays 🥚

Let’s talk grow outs! 🐣✨

There’s something so exciting — and painfully impatient! — about watching the chicks you’ve hatched by hand grow, change and slowly show you what they’re going to become. Every new feather has you looking a little closer, especially when those colours and patterns you’ve been hoping for start coming through.

This young cockerel is one of Sunny’s offspring, and he has definitely caught my eye. The depth of his colour is beautiful, and I’m loving watching that lacing develop as he matures. He’s certainly the favourite of this year’s grow outs so far of the buff laced… although there’s still plenty of growing to do!

Growing birds out is such a huge part of the learning process. For me, breeding isn’t just about hatching chicks, selling them and moving on to the next batch. It’s about having the patience to grow them out, evaluate what we’ve produced, recognise where we can improve and keep working towards beautiful, healthy, quality birds that meet the standard.

This year’s grow outs will help shape next year’s breeding pens — keeping the best qualities, learning from what didn’t quite hit the mark, and making each generation that little bit better.

Hatch. Grow. Learn. Improve. Repeat. 🤎🐥

P.s I was too excited to share these photos. I’ll have to grab some photos of him in the sun to share 😍
