Jardilunji Mia Enjoy a taste of local Bush Tucker and Gascoyne produce in Carnarvon!

Since February, four Real Futures hospitality trainees have combined fortnightly, full-day Certificate II blocks at Central Regional TAFE with paid shifts at cafes around Carnavon, including Jardilunji Mia.

Recently, under internationally celebrated Chef Ben Ing at the Carnarvon Long Table Lunch, they flawlessly served over 200 guests—translating classroom theory into real-world service.

Next week they graduate with nationally recognised Certificate II in Hospitality in hand. Backed by Real Futures’ paid training and industry partnerships, these graduates join WA’s booming tourism sector armed with:
• Hands-on event skills
• Barista & front-of-house expertise
• A direct line to local employers

Real Futures is proud to launch careers and strengthen the regional workforce.

A New Career in Hospitality for Mary 🤩

One of our wonderful clients and hospitality students is Mary Edney.

Mary is a determined single mother, has made a remarkable transition from long-term unemployment to becoming an empowered individual who is inspiring her community.

Mary began her journey with limited proof of identity, which had been a barrier to achieving her goals.

Through the support of the Central Regional TAFE Carnarvon team, she successfully obtained her full driver’s license and purchased her first car—a significant milestone!

In July 2024, Mary enrolled in a Certificate II in Hospitality, delivered at our Jardilunji Mia training café in partnership with Central Regional TAFE.

Despite encountering personal family challenges during her study, she persevered with determination.

In November 2024, Mary proudly graduated with her certification and a renewed sense of purpose.

Her hard work was recognised when she won TAFE’s "Most Dedicated Individual" award.

Mary has continued to succeed, using her new skills in a role at Jardilunji Mia Café, where she is also a mentor to the new hospitality students.

Today, our Hospitality students took a well-deserved break from their classroom sessions to visit Gwoonwardu Mia.

This hands-on experience allowed them to learn about and plant native herbs and bush tucker, which they can later incorporate into their future dishes.

A huge thank you to Annie, the Central Regional TAFE Horticulture Lecturer, for guiding them through the planting process.

The students will continue to cultivate and expand their knowledge of these plants.

We also appreciate Gail's ongoing support of the students in their studies.

This activity not only highlights teamwork and creativity but also emphasizes the importance of cultural and environmental sustainability.

We are excited to welcome our 5th batch of students to the Certificate II in Hospitality program! 🎉

Today, our students had the opportunity to visit Jardilunji Mia, where they will be engaging in their work placements, gaining valuable hands-on experience.

They also explored Gwoonwardu Mia, immersing themselves in the local culture.

So far, the students have been thoroughly enjoying their first week of training in collaboration with Central Regional TAFE.

A special thank you to Kathleen and Aisha, from the previous batch, who are still actively engaged at the café, for warmly welcoming the new students and offering their support 🤗

We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to Barry for sharing his invaluable wisdom with the students and for graciously welcoming them to Gwoonwardu Mia.

Your guidance and encouragement are truly appreciated!

This week, our Jardilunji Mia hospitality students Joshua, Mary and Kesuma showcased their skills in canape food service at the Carnarvon Hospitality, Tourism and Retail Business Forum!

They worked with Maria from Mundilya Homestead who guided them throughout the evening and taught them about the delicious food they were serving.

Maria said that she was happy to work with the team again in the future 😊

The students also got to watch the presentations and got some great ideas on how to make the town inviting to tourists from this forum.

Well done to Mary, Kesuma and Joshua - you have bright futures in hospitality ahead of you!

Well done to our hospitality students who did a brilliant job supporting the Gwoonwardu Mia Art Gallery opening event in Carnarvon recently 👏🏽

They created, plated and served a delicious local menu to the guests, including a fabulous mocktail 🍹 menu.

As always, thank you to Mark Attard for his teaching and mentoring.

These students receive practical training at our café, Jardilunji Mia, located inside Gwoonwardu Mia. They course modules and qualification is facilitated by the Central Regional TAFE.

This is their final catering event for the year however later this month, they will be supporting the food service at the Gascoyne Hospitality, Tourism and Business Forum.

Once these students graduate with their Cert II in Hospitality, they will be ready to take their skills to the local industry and find fulfilling jobs 😄
