It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Michael “Big Mick” O’Reilly last night.

For many years, Big Mick enriched the O’Reilly’s experience with his genuine love of the birdlife, unforgettable personality and remarkable ability to remember the names of so many guests—with a little help from his treasured library of notebooks.

He will also be fondly remembered for burning the toast, attempting to play the harmonica and bringing plenty of laughter and character to the mountain.

We know many of you will have special memories of Big Mick, and we invite you to share your stories and photos in the comments below.

Rest peacefully, Big Mick. You will be greatly missed. 🤍

This August, we are fortunate to have renowned adventurer Ben Southall leading the trek. Founder of Best Life Adventures and winner of Tourism Queensland’s “Best Job in the World,” Ben has completed extraordinary endurance challenges and led wilderness expeditions across the globe.

Following sections of Bernard O’Reilly’s original 1937 search route, this unforgettable full-day trek ventures deep into World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park. Traverse steep climbs, dense rainforest, rough off-track terrain and technical descents before reaching the remote Stinson crash site.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: This highly demanding Grade 5 experience is designed for FIT AND EXPERIENCED HIKERS ONLY. Participants must be comfortable hiking long distances over difficult terrain and capable of maintaining a steady pace throughout the day. Preparation is essential.
