🌞 Solstice at Stonehenge 🌞 21st June

Every year on the Summer Solstice, people gather Stonehenge to watch the sun rise over the ancient stones, continuing a tradition that has fascinated visitors for centuries.

Among them are Wiccans and other Pagan groups who celebrate the changing seasons and their connection to nature.

To mark the solstice, we’ve added a group of individually hand painted miniature Wiccan figures to our Stonehenge display, bringing a little of this modern tradition to Cockington Green.

Flashback Friday

After yesterday’s Braemar Castle post, we thought we’d share this special photo of Doug and Brenda Sarah visiting the original castle in Scotland on 23 May 2017.

A wonderful memory of the founders of Cockington Green standing in front of one of the castles that has delighted visitors to the gardens for decades.

🏰 A Special Connection to Braemar Castle

A few weeks ago, we shared a post about our miniature Braemar Castle here at Cockington Green Gardens.

To our delight, the post was seen by Colin Wolf, President of Clan Farquharson USA, who reached out to share the clan’s connection to the castle. Through our conversations, Colin provided the history of Clan Farquharson and its relationship with Braemar Castle, which remains the ancestral home of the Chief of Clan Farquharson.

Inspired by this special connection, we have added a small group of Clan Farquharson figures in their official tartan to our Braemar Castle display. A special thank you to Debbie, who patiently hand painted each figure, including the tartan, at miniature scale.

In Colin’s words:

Braemar Castle has served as the ancestral seat of the Farquharsons of Invercauld since 1732, following its acquisition by John Farquharson, 9th Laird of Invercauld. From this point onward, the castle has functioned as the symbolic center of the clan’s authority in Upper Deeside. For nearly three centuries, it has provided a tangible foundation for the Invercauld lineage, embodying continuity, stewardship, and the enduring presence of the Farquharsons within the landscape that has shaped their collective identity.

This unbroken lineage persists today through the current Chief, Philip Farquharson of Invercauld and Monaltrie, who is the lineal and recognized head of Clan Farquharson. Braemar Castle continues to serve as the clan’s ancestral seat under his leadership and occupies a significant position in the heritage of Farquharsons globally. Successive generations travel to Braemar as a form of personal pilgrimage, seeking to engage with the historic center of their heritage and establish a direct connection with the residence of their chiefs.

With special thanks to Colin Wolf, President of Clan Farquharson USA, for sharing this history and helping us tell the story behind our miniature Braemar Castle.

Only weeks away from turning 88, Doug just might be working on something special for his birthday… 😉

And no, it’s not spending his days grinding fibreglass carriages and looking more like Papa Smurf! 😂

We should have a little more to share with everyone over the next few weeks.

Stay tuned… 🥳🎉🥰

Flashback Friday - Early 1980s

Before Cockington Green operated its own steam train, visitors enjoyed rides on the miniature railway run by Stan Hennock.

The locomotive, seen here carrying the GWR (Great Western Railway) livery, was a familiar sight to many early visitors.

As Doug recalls, everything simply ran smoothly with Stan. There were no dramas, just years of friendship, reliability and happy memories for countless visitors.

Away from the railway, Stan was a highly skilled restorer of classic Jaguars, while his wife Narelle owned a florist shop in Curtin.

Stan and Narelle were a much loved part of the Cockington Green family in the early years.

Sadly, both Stan and Narelle have since passed away, but they remain a fond part of Cockington Green’s history.

The beautiful Torogan House from the Philippines, located in our International Area, is one of the few buildings at Cockington Green that was not originally built by our own team.

After many years exposed to Canberra’s weather, it was in need of some much needed TLC.

With the family busy keeping Cockington Green running, Doug was more than happy to lend a hand. At 87 years of age, he took the model home and carefully restored it, bringing this beautiful building back to life.

With faithful companion Maggie (Doug and Brenda's cat of 16 years) supervising every step of the way, the Torogan House has now been returned to the gardens and proudly stands once again in the International Area.

Doug would also like to extend his sincere thanks to Jerry from Uneke Furniture in Bungendore for preparing and generously providing, free of charge, the beautiful cedar boarding cut to the exact dimensions required for the restoration. Your kindness and craftsmanship are greatly appreciated.

Just another example of the care, craftsmanship and family effort that helps keep Doug and Brenda’s dream alive. 😊

Another Restoration Project for Doug 😊
Many of you have been enjoying following Doug’s journey as he recreates the original XPT train for Cockington Green.

At 87 years of age, Doug has also been quietly working on another restoration project behind the scenes.

The beautiful Torogan House from the Philippines, located in our International Area, is one of the few buildings at Cockington Green that was not originally built by our own team.

After many years exposed to Canberra’s weather, the model was showing its age and needed some much needed TLC.

The Torogan House was carefully transported to Doug’s home workshop, where he spent countless hours restoring the intricate details and bringing the building back to life.

We are excited to share that the restoration is now complete, and the Torogan House is proudly back in its place for visitors to enjoy once again.

Over the coming days, we’ll be sharing more of the restoration journey and some behind the scenes photos of the work involved in returning this beautiful model to its former glory.
