Let me show you how quota actually works. ๐Ÿ“Š๐ŸŽฃ

Australia is one small part of a much bigger international tuna fishery. ๐ŸŒŠ

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ Here at home, AFMA uses science, stock assessments and catch data to set the Total Allowable Commercial Catch or TACC for each species, and fishers must hold quota rights to cover what they catch. ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ“

For albacore, Australiaโ€™s TACC is 2,500 tonnes which is equivalent to only about 3.4% of the albacore caught across the wider South Pacific fishery. ๐Ÿ“‰๐ŸŸ And quota doesnโ€™t mean we catch every tonne.

Fish move. ๐ŸŒŠ Weather changes. โ›ˆ๏ธ Markets change. ๐Ÿ“Š Sometimes boats simply donโ€™t fish. โš“

Quota tells us what weโ€™re allowed to catch under a science-based management system. ๐Ÿ“‹โœ…

And hereโ€™s the part people often miss: ๐Ÿ’ก less Australian fishing doesnโ€™t automatically mean less fishing.

โš ๏ธ Tuna keep moving through the Pacific across borders and marine park boundaries while the international fishery keeps operating under different management and monitoring systems. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿšข

Thatโ€™s why keeping Australian fishing families in this fishery matters because when tuna are caught by our fleet, we know the system they come through: ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

Science-based catch limits. ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ“‰
Satellite tracking. ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ๐Ÿ“
Cameras and electronic monitoring. ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ’ป
Mandatory reporting. ๐Ÿ“โœ…
Independent MSC sustainability certification. ๐Ÿ†๐ŸŒฑ

And South Pacific albacore is scientifically assessed as not overfished, with overfishing not occurring. ๐Ÿ“ˆ๐ŸŸ

37 vessels. ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ Australian fishing families. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Science-backed quota. ๐Ÿ“‹ A fishery we can see, measure and hold accountable. ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ’ฏ

Protecting tuna shouldnโ€™t only be about where fishing doesnโ€™t happen. ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ It should also be about making sure that where fishing does happen, itโ€™s done well. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ‘

You know Watt we mean. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐ŸŽฃ

Every seafood choice has a footprint. The only question is: where do you want yours to land? ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŸ

Australia looks after the 3rd largest fishing zone on Earth, with fisheries operating under some of the worldโ€™s highest sustainability and monitoring standards.

Yet only around 1 in 3 bites of seafood eaten here is actually Australian.

And for our beloved canned tuna?

Around 1 in 1,000 tins is Australian tuna.

So when more of the seafood we eat is caught overseas, its environmental and social footprint can move overseas too sometimes into places with weaker fisheries management, environmental oversight and labour protections than ours.

Thereโ€™s a name for this:

seafood footprint displacement.

And hereโ€™s the bit worth thinking about:

If well managed Australian fishers stopped supplying that seafood, Australians wouldnโ€™t suddenly stop eating it. More of that demand would simply be met somewhere else.

The seafood still gets eaten. The footprint just happens somewhere else.

Backing our Australian fishing families keeps more of what we eat connected to science backed management, monitoring and accountability.

And that matters well beyond our own coastline. ๐ŸŒ

Our Eastern Tuna and Billfish Fishery has been Marine Stewardship Council certified since 2015, the same global standard used to judge sustainable seafood anywhere in the world. Thatโ€™s independently verified and itโ€™s exactly why weโ€™re proud of where Australian tuna comes from.

For Australian tuna the gap is huge.

1 in 1,000 today.
Our goal: 1 in 100.

Support Australian fishing families. Help us close the gap.

Know where your tuna comes from. Know the people who catch it.

Choose Australian tuna. ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ๐ŸŸ Share this around ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

37 boats. Thatโ€™s it. ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ๐ŸŸ

When you hear tuna fleet, you might picture something enormous. But the reality? Just 37 vessels fishing one bloody big ocean. ๐ŸŒŠ

And hereโ€™s the bit people often miss: 37 vessels doesnโ€™t mean 37 boats are out there fishing every single day. Boats come and go with seasons, weather, maintenance and fishing conditions. ๐ŸŸ

When they are out there, our tuna fishery is managed, camera monitored, tracked and backed by science. ๐Ÿ“Š

Small fleet. Big ocean. A LOT of oversight. And some seriously good tuna. ๐ŸคŒ

Our fishers make their living from these waters. Looking after them isnโ€™t a marketing line it matters to the future of their families, their businesses and the fishery they love itself.

Australian tuna. Science backed. Highly monitored. Proudly fished. ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ๐ŸŸ

Know where your tuna comes from. Know the people who catch it.

Eat Australian tuna.
