Today we recognise the significant contributions of club legend and current member Colleen Duff.
Colleen moved from Bunbury in 1983 and has called Broome home ever since.
She has had a few roles in Broome, first working for the local bakery with former club members Rae and Ron Howard, then taking up a housekeeping role at Cable Beach Club, where she would meet and greet some of the biggest names in showbusiness.
Colleen finished her working life with Coles, working a staggering 26 years in the supermarket industry.
Today she plays golf as often as she can, but it is her role as the “rose in our greenkeeping shed” which deserves the most recognition.
Colleen first started playing golf at Broome Golf Club in 1999 after an unfortunate incident on the badminton court.
“I took a step forward at badminton, trying to do a drop shot over the net and my feet went out from underneath me and I fell on my bum, so I said, ‘that’s it, I’m going to go and play golf’,” she said.
Her love for the game grew and grew, having only previously played once before at the age of 15 at boarding school.
“I came out and played on a Thursday with Barbara Haynes and Ann Smith, just nine holes,” Colleen said.
Then the new year rolled around and Colleen got herself a membership and the rest is history.
She has played a pivotal role behind the scenes at Broome Golf Club for many years, routinely putting up her hand to serve as Vice Captain, Scroungers Captain as well as doing the handicaps for both the men and women for many years.
Colleen remembers many great times at the club when the ladies would travel throughout the Kimberley for tournaments. The themed nights were always a highlight, as were the bus trips and flights with the then club sponsor Ansett Airways.
After retiring Colleen started volunteering with the guys down at the maintenance shed and soon put her hand up to operate the mower once a week every Wednesday from 5.30am.
“They fill up the mower for me and get it all ready and I just drive it and they decide what they want me to do,” Colleen said.
“I enjoy doing it because I am out there and I can see what is going on.”
Today Colleen is regularly seen alongside her sidekick, club legend Carol Howe, with the pair always putting up their hands to help the club wherever needed.
“We do the light stuff, we won’t do the heavy stuff, that’s the boys job,” she said.
It is this sort of volunteer effort that makes our club the place it is today and we are truly grateful for the years of service Colleen has given us at Broome Golf Club.
Thank you to Colleen for taking the time to chat to us about her history with the club and for digging through her photo albums for these wonderful memories.
