Barbera came first.

In 1998, Andrew planted Barbera at Ceres Hill using cuttings from Montrose in Mudgee, vines that could be traced back to Piedmont in Italy.

It wasn’t an immediate success. The first few Hunter summers took some adjusting, both for the vines and for us. But with time, they found their place in Broke Fordwich.

Almost three decades later, our Ceres Hill block is the only vineyard remaining from those original Italian vinestocks, and Barbera has become an iconic w**e for Margan.

Not bad for an experiment.

Spring lunch, this time on the Central Coast.

This November, we’re heading to Bells at Killcare to celebrate 30 years of Margan over a long lunch and a few very good bottles.

We’ll start with canapés and a glass of La Niña before settling in for a seasonal three-course menu from the Bells kitchen, with our new Spring Release w**es poured alongside museum vintages and a few older favourites from the cellar.

Andrew, Lisa and Ollie will be there for the afternoon, sharing the w**es and a few stories from the past 30 years along the way.

It started with a question: what else could grow here?

Semillon and Shiraz will always be part of the Hunter, but almost 30 years ago Andrew and Lisa began looking beyond the varieties the region was best known for.

Barbera came first in 1998. Albarino followed, and Mourvedre, as it turns out, was already here.

There’s been plenty of trial and error along the way. Different sites, different seasons and a lot of learning about what each variety needs to thrive in Broke Fordwich.

It’s a curiosity that has shaped our vineyard ever since, and one that still influences how we think about what we grow today.

October is looking pretty good from where we’re standing.

Budburst is underway, the kitchen garden is keeping us busy and there’s plenty happening both on and off the farm.

We’ll be heading to Balmoral for Uncorked on the 18th, while back in Broke Fordwich there are w**es to taste, long lunches to settle into and plenty to see around the farm.

Spring might just be our favourite time to have you here.

See you in October. Booking via our bio.

How long should lunch take?

Long enough for another glass. A wander through the garden afterwards. Maybe a tasting while you’re here.

Make an afternoon of it.

There’s no shortage of good things coming out of our Kitchen Garden at this time of year. Spring means plenty of new growth, with something always being planted, picked or making its way up to the kitchen.

What’s ready helps shape our Farmer’s Table experience, with Chef Harry and the team building each menu around the garden, the season and the w**es we grow here on the farm.

Come and see where lunch begins.

Hunter Valley w**e, Balmoral sunshine. We can work with that.

We’re packing up a few Margan favourites and heading to the harbour for Uncorked Balmoral this October.

Spend the afternoon tasting your way through some of NSW’s best producers, with plenty of good w**e, good food and a pretty hard-to-beat view.

Come and find us for a pour. We’ll bring the w**e.
