Guys I’ve thought long & hard about this post but given how the world seems to be changing it’s time to start being more vocal.
This is the local Brighton Convenience Store run by Andy who I’ve only just recently met. I don’t often go here because I’m closer to another. But I went here recently because I know they usually do school books for Brighton State School and I needed a few things.
Andy is selling all his stock at 50% off. Why, because the roof of the building he rents was damaged in storms & he will now need to close completely so the owner of the property can have the insurance do repairs.
Did you know that we as tenants pay the owners building insurance? Did you know we pay for almost everything? The agents fees to manage the place, the repairs to anything that gets broken in the shop … in my case sometimes even repairs to the shop next door.
Why is Andy selling everything at half price? Because after we pay all the owners insurance & so forth we then have to find more money to pay our own insurances. Trying to be insured for this sort of occurrence is almost impossible.
Do you know what the building owners are responsible for? Maintaining the structural integrity of their property. That’s it & in some cases they even try to pass this on as well, we should know as our owners leave our own building with rusted gutters and rotted walls.
All we small business owners ever want is to run a community business that supports you. We want to get to know you, see your kids grow, celebrate with you at your latest achievement & cry with you with your losses. We try our hardest to help, giveback & ask nothing more than to earn a living the same as any other job. There are no great profits in this game of small business ownership, just a lot of risk we take for the small simple pleasures of getting to be your friend, your safe space or your respite.
I know it’s a tough time of year but if you need an extra school book, or even a pack of gum go see Andy & help him through these incredibly hard days so he can get back to being there for you.
The school supplies we will have for you to take free, are all things I’ve purchased from Andy.
