Be sure to wear sturdy sneakers or reef shoes, as the exposed sandbar and rocky areas can be uneven or sharp.

Park around the street and on the grass near Dalrymple Point Beach in Bowen.

Times to start walking :

🔱 August 11th 2026

Start walking 1.45pm or earlier.
Low tide is at 2.48pm.

Start walking 2.30pm or earlier.
Low tide is at at 3.31pm.

The Bowen Lighthouse Walk is a unique North Queensland event.

During extreme low tides in winter a sandbar is revealed.

It allows you to walk directly from the mainland at Dalrymple Point Beach to North Head Island.

Please be aware this is not a guided event and your safety is your own responsibility.

Explore Cape Edgecumbe and discover a whole new side of Bowen at low tide! 🌊🪸

The coastal trails around Cape Edgecumbe offer beautiful views over Bowen’s bays, rocky headlands and tropical coastline.

But when the tide retreats at Murray Bay, another world is revealed!

No boat or snorkelling equipment required.

🪸🐚🐠🦀🪸

Take a walk along the exposed shoreline and discover colourful coral, rock pools and marine life usually hidden beneath the water.

The great thing about exploring the reef like this that you can stand on the boulders around the coral and not worry about causing any damage.

As the water retreats, you can walk out among the exposed rocks and boulders around the shoreline and get a close-up look at the incredible colours and textures of the reef.
The large, bare boulders are also a great place to stop, stand and take in the view without stepping on the living coral. Stick to the rocks, tread lightly and leave the coral exactly where it is — so this beautiful little piece of Bowen’s coastline can continue to thrive for everyone to enjoy. 🌴🪸

Low tide adventures in Bowen 🪸🐚🪼

There's so much to see when the tide goes out at Murray Bay!

Murray Bay is one of Bowen's mainland fringing-reef locations.

When the tide retreats at Murray Bay, Bowen, the shallow fringing reef is revealed, exposing colourful coral, rocky reef flats and fascinating marine life.

It’s a beautiful glimpse into the Great Barrier Reef environment right from the shoreline. 🐠⭐

Murray Bay at low tide is a whole different world! 🌊🪸

Quick tide check before tomorrow's lighthouse walk.

Is it low? Yes.
Is it beautiful weather in Bowen today? Yes.
Fingers crossed it stays nice for the next two days.

That time the sea fog rolled into Bowen.

Was talking to a fisherman this morning and he mentioned that in his 20 years on a boat, he'd never seen sea fog.

So I dragged out this footage from last year when a thick fog covered all of Bowen and its bays and beaches.

Grays Bay was actually grey 😁😁😁

You may have noticed some fog in town around the lagoon this morning (10 August).

It'll be interesting to see if it ever happens like the video again.
