A LITTLE HEADS UP 🍻

Unfortunately, we’ll be CLOSED Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th October due to staffing limitations.

We genuinely hate having to close our doors, especially on a weekend, but sometimes the reality of running a little country pub means we simply don’t have the hands to make it happen.

We know plenty of you make the trip out to Bethanga to visit us, so please help us spread the word. We’d hate for anyone to drive all the way out and be disappointed!

We’re incredibly thankful for your understanding and continued support. It means a lot to our little pub and the team behind it.

Jam Night is back at the Bethanga and, as always, we have absolutely no idea where the night will take us… which is half the fun.

BACK BAR STORIES | VOL. 33 🍻 1907 📖

One lovely local recently trusted us with this incredible photograph of Bethanga in 1907, and we thought it deserved a closer look.

By then, mining had been shaping Bethanga for more than 30 years, after the discovery of the New Year’s Gift reef in 1876 sparked the opening of the Bethanga goldfield. Mining was still active when this photo was taken, although its biggest days were nearing their end.

Bethanga was still a sizeable little community too. While we don’t have an exact population for 1907, the 1911 census recorded 648 people living here. Just ten years later, after the mines had closed, that number had fallen to 364.

And if 1907 sounds familiar, it should. It was also the year Bethanga Football Club began, starting a story that would continue in various forms for almost another century. If you missed it, have a look back at Back Bar Stories Vol. 32 for more of that story.

Take a closer look at the roads, fences, houses and buildings dotted across the valley. The church you can see on the right has since been moved, and today Bethanga Hotel sits just below that dirt road. However, the hills surrounding the town look almost the same.

What can you spot?

Maybe you recognise a building or know where something once stood. Maybe your relatives lived here, or you grew up hearing stories of Bethanga from around this time. Or maybe you know the photographer!
