Avalon Honey I love to educate people about honey bees 🥰🐝 Avalon Honey and bee pollen is available at 32 Elouera Road, Avalon Beach. I also make beeswax candles and wraps.

It was a beautiful day for beekeeping with the sun shining and 23°C this afternoon. I took the opportunity to do a full inspection of my home hives. Found the queen bee in each of my home hives.

Hive 1 had new queen back in June, so she was already marked. Hive 2 had a new queen last month, which I hadn’t marked previously as wanted to make sure she was laying first.

This video show the newly marked queen in hive 3. I’ve not seen the queen in this hive for over 6 months. I usually don’t actively look for the queen, just evidence that she’s there. So long as there is brood at all stages she’s doing her job and seeing eggs means she’s been there in the last 1 to 3 days. It also means the colony can raise a new queen should something untoward should happen to the queen.

This queen is quite a dark colour and is very productive in laying eggs. She also produces pretty calm and productive bees which is good for my enjoyment of this hobby 🥰🐝

I have nucs available if any budding beekeepers want to get started. Spring is a great time to start as bees are building their numbers rapidly. I also have both new and second hand hives available. Just drop me a a message if you’re interested.

I love seeing our backyard avocado tree in bloom. It doesn’t last for long and some years we miss it as we have been camping over these school holidays. I have seen it in other years covered in honey bees 🐝 I’ve often assumed it’s my own bees as my hives are so close, just a few meters from the tree. However this morning I noticed something buzzing and on closer inspection it was hundreds if not thousands of hover flys and a few regular flys. While I was perhaps a little disappointed my own Avalon Honey Bees were not pollinating our avocados 🥑 I am happy to see many hundreds of these hover flys getting the job done and enjoying the pollen/nectar this tree produces 🌳🪰

Please help all our local native pollinators by not using insecticides and planting a variety of different plants and trees in your own garden space 🪰🦋🐞🪲🐝

Australia is home to around 160 species of hoverflies, with common varieties including the Common Hoverfly (Melangyna viridiceps) and the Stout Hoverfly (Simosyrphus grandicornis). If you’re interested in buying honey in larger quantities or for a special event, you just need to message me, ideally with plenty of notice. I recently made up 28 x 320g jars for a local business that gives these as gifts to their clients. Last month I made 20 x 200g jars for a baby shower as favours. I also supply some regular customers by filling their own jars of varied sizes.

The reason it’s important to message me well in advance as I generally get honey from the harvesting buckets into jars pretty quickly, and have to make decisions about the jar sizes to fill at the time 🍯🍯🍯 so any advance orders can be accommodated the next time I harvest.

Honey bees are incredibly productive and take full advantage of the natural resources in our fabulous local environment 🌻🐝🌼🐝 I have started to use pollen traps from time to time to slow my bees from storing too much pollen in their brood area.

This video shows up close how the pollen traps work on the front of a hive. The bees squeeze through small circular rings, which knock the pollen off their back legs into the catch tray below. I only leave them on for a part of the day and some days it can be incredible how much pollen a colony collects.

I only use these traps on a strong colony and make sure the bees have sufficient for their own use. The heath of the colony is always my top priority 🥰🐝

I love to eat pollen on my yogurt and I sell pollen for $20/100g. Best to message me as I have a list of customers that want pollen and it’s only available intermittently when my bees have too much.

I’ve been making splits from my hives in order to prevent my colonies from swarming. It’s important to understand that swarming is the honey bees natural way to reproduce and multiply their numbers. By making a split, the original colony have more space and the new colony makes one or more queen cells. In this case the original colonies had started to make queen cells, so I made splits with queen cells in progress.

This video clip shows the hatched out virgin queen and also the cell that she hatched from. Comment in the post the time of the video when you spot the queen. She’s not always in the frame 😉

if you’re in Avalon Beach tomorrow (Sunday 19 September 2026) then the person that spots her the earliest can collect a free small jar of fresh Avalon Honey that I’ve harvested today. Come to Avalon Public School at midday where I’ll be giving a talk about honey bees and native bees. It’s free so come along to meet my bees 🐝 I’ll be at the APS garden near the entrance on Bellevue Avenue. There are also talks on worm farms and composting by Kimbriki Recycling Centre.

Avalon Honey makes a sweet gift for any event. A customer recently bought 30 jars as gifts for guests attending their baby shower. They dressed the jars up with a piece of hessian and a cute label 🎁😊

Please contact me well in advance of any event you have planned as I don’t always have honey available. Currently only have the jars that are left on my honey table and my next 10kg Spring harvest has been pre-ordered by a regular customer for corporate gifts 🍯🐝
