Fresh seafood is our specialty, along with a variety of Chris’s most popular Greek dishes. In our cuisine, the emphasis is on simplicity and on showcasing the natural flavour of the ingredients. If we can’t get it fresh it isn’t on our menu. Our wine list showcases the best wines of our region as well as the finest wines that define the character of Australia’s greatest wine regions; especially chosen to complement our menu, with a price range to suit all budgets.

So. The Winchelsea (Lorne) Shire were very, very pissy at Dad.

They had decided that this upstart Greek immigrant needed to be taught a lesson and the Greeks in Lorne needed to be taught a healthy respect for the ‘nature’ of things.

They made it clear that Pink was inappropriate and went against bla bla bla (insert political bs here). They had it in mind to close the restaurant, which was well within their power to do.

There was one little problem. Chris’s Restaurant had become the local haunt for the Lorne elite. This included non-resident ‘residents’ besides politicians, judges, actors, media celebrities, artists, fashion designers…(and so on…) to a number of very prominent legal professionals. Yes. Lawyers.

One thing led to another and the Winchelsea Shire was given the message that closing Chris’s Restaurant would not be without consequences…

The Winchelsea Shire faded until long term customer and Chris’s long term faithful JK amalgamated them out of existence. That was in ‘94. Had nothing to do with us! Agricultural corn and cow towns struggle to run coastal tourism towns. Just ask Colac. Apollo Bay looks like Lorne…in the 70’s!!

End result. Chris’s gets final coat of paint. Hot pink. Legal team gets the best table in the house. Little restaurant in Lorne becomes famous. So famous other restaurants in town started having to stop peddling pot and start working harder to handle the inflow!

Now. How much of this is true I leave to the reader. Chris’s Tshirts were seen in Paris. Thats true!

I’m looking for a photo of the pink Chris’s. There was a painting entitled ‘something like Chris’s’ by Bob Coy that burned in the Skenes Crk fire with another by Barry Humphries ‘for Chris’.

So. ‘Twas the 80’s. And the Winchelsea Lorne shire had a proposition by David Marriner to knock down and rebuild the Cumberland Hotel into a new timeshare resort. He had even bought all the land. All the land except the bottom block. Which was owned by Chris.

So the Council from CR ‘Whingen’ StJohn (pronounced ‘Singen’ Sutton to the Dog Catcher (bylaws officer) tried to lean on Dad. Food Premises Registration bylaws issues etc.

They also insisted on a repaint. So Dad used that pink primer to get the ball rolling.

He hadn’t put the top coat on when the council, miffed beyond plausible comprehension at Dad’s taking his sweet time, were in touch.

They wanted to know when the final coat was to be applied as they were unhappy with the bright pink primer on a restaurant in the Main Street.

Dad being Dad replied. Oh I did put the top coat on. It’s pink like the primer.

Jip, they went absolutely ap***it! Dad. Well Dad closed for winter and went on his annual three-month holiday to Greece. Gave David Marriner and the council some time to rethink their strategy!

So here’s the deal. I found one of the Chris’s T-shirts from like 20 years ago. New with label. Saba. Totally a collectors’ item. In typical Chris’s fashion it contains nudity disguised as art!!🤣

Any takers? I figure best Chris’s story or photo gets it (if anyone can be bothered).

Unless theres, like, only one story!

G-rated stories only.

The first review. Jan 9, 1974!

“The best food in Victoria, indeed in the whole of Australia is, I think, to be found in Lorne, a sort of minor Bognor Regis along the coast from Geelong, where the grammar school boys go. and where they claim to teach them to survive in the bush, in the unlikely event of any of the young gentlemen ever finding themselves in such a predicament. In Lorne, make for the Marine Cafe run by a young Greek to whom the gods have imparted the secret of cooking craylish“

FAREWELL
After 53 years on the Great Ocean Road starting with the original iconic Chris's in Lorne in 1972 and taking on Beacon Point in 1978, it is with deep emotion that we make it known that Chris's Beacon Point Restaurant & Villas has been sold to the Memishi family. We wish them every success in taking the business forward.

WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK A FEW PEOPLE...

Our suppliers, some of which we have been doing business with since the 70's which range from fish suppliers to wine makers and a lot in between- too many to list!! We thank you for your support and friendship.

A special thank you to the people of Apollo Bay and the Great Ocean Road in general without whom running a business like Chris's over the long cold Otways winters would be an exercise of futility. You have staffed Chris's, dined there, gotten married there, had Fathers' Days' and Mothers' Days and birthdays, anniversaries (and so on) there for decades. We are honoured for the association and the trust.

Of course the biggest thank you goes out to the staff of Chris's. In over five decades many people have worked at Chris's in Lorne and Apollo Bay. They have come from every corner of the globe and many of them have gone on to achieve wonderous things. Twenty years ago it was not unusual for someone to say my "mother or father worked at Chris's". Now it's more like: "My grandmother or grandfather!" A personal touch to hospitality was never possible without these people and it was these people that made Chris's the institution that it became. Through moves from Lorne to the Bay and fires and...everything else. Our deepest thanks to you.

Last and certainly not least, we would like to thank our loyal customers who have supported us over the years- the decades! We have made it our aim to bring a personal touch to hospitality and in the course of this endeavour many of you have become from friendly acquaintances to lifelong friends. We wish you all well and thank you for your support and custom.

Good Bye!
