Marcus is in the WAWDW chair this week, and anyone who’s chatted to him at the bar knows he’s a seriously quick sprinter. This weekend he’s heading down to Geelong for his first race of the season, so he’s picked the only b**r that fits the occasion: Ocean Reach Brewing 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗣𝗔.

Sprinters live on three things: a clean start, no wasted effort, and a finish that arrives before you’ve worked out what happened. A West Coast IPA is built the same way: dry, sharp, no filler. Good luck down at Geelong, Marcus. We’ll be here with the cold ones when you get back, win or lose.

Ocean Reach are a family-run brewery and distillery on Phillip Island, with their tasting room in Cowes. The Bismire family swapped their Melbourne careers for the island life and opened the doors on 3 December 2016, and they’ve been picking up awards ever since, including a Gold at the Australian International B**r Awards in 2021 for their IPA. High Hopes is one of their new limited releases, so it won’t be around forever.

Post-Marathon Legs, Pre-Marathon Energy 🏃‍♂️🍺

First up, congrats and well done to everyone who took on the Melbourne Marathon Festival over the weekend. Whether you ran the full distance or one of the shorter ones, proud of you all.

Last week’s run clubs were a ripper. Yarraville stole the show with the shakeout run alongside TRC Yarraville and Maurten, and Point Cook turned out in force too. Sun out, conditions perfect, ideal for getting some miles in before race weekend.

Weather-wise, it’s a week of two halves. Tuesday’s a cool, grey, breezy one into Yarraville, with a few light showers possible through the afternoon that should ease off by the time we line up, so layer up. Wednesday stays cool and cloudy for Altona, with a bit of a breeze but looking dry. Then Thursday brightens up nicely for Point Cook, with a sunny afternoon mellowing into a mild evening. Not a bad way to finish the run club week.

Run clubs as usual this week: Tuesday Yarraville, Wednesday Altona, Thursday Point Cook. Meet 6:15pm, run 6:30pm. Refuel afterwards at Village Cantina, Pier 71 or Old Pal Korean Kitchen, with the HHRC menu waiting.

🎬 𝐖𝐀𝐖𝐃𝐖 — 𝐁𝐎𝐃𝐘 𝐃𝐎𝐔𝐁𝐋𝐄

Mike's back in the WAWDW chair this week with a new limited release from the Brisbane experimenters at Working Title Brew Co.: 𝗕𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗗𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲, a 7.5% Mixed Berry Smoothie Sour.

In movies, the body double is the stand-in who does the hard work while someone else gets the glory. In this can, the stand-in is a b**r pretending to be a dessert, and it's pulling off the performance. Triple fruited with berries, then loaded up with lactose, marshmallow fluff and coconut cream, with chocolate rolling in for the final scene. Award-season stuff.

Working Title are well worth knowing. Luke Shield and Mark Howes started out in 2021 as gypsy brewers, making small batches on other people's gear, before opening their own brewpub in 2023 in the old Newstead Brewing space on Doggett Street in Brisbane. There's no core range and they rarely make the same b**r twice, which is why a lot of their releases only get one run. This is one of them.

A bit of a mixed bag for HHRC last week — Thursday's wild weather rolled in and completely wiped out Point Cook's run, but we still got out there regardless. Yarraville and Altona both had no such trouble and showed up as usual.

Huge week coming up. With the Melbourne Marathon now less than a week away, The Running Company-Yarraville are teaming up with Maurten— the fuelling experts — for a pre-marathon shakeout run. Chat to the Maurten crew about race-day fuelling and there'll be giveaways on the day too.

This week's looking a bit mixed but mostly kind to us — Tuesday's a touch-and-go one into Yarraville with some showers and wind moving through earlier in the day, though it should settle by run time. Wednesday's shaping up as the pick of the week for Altona, clear and crisp. And Thursday's turning on some real warmth for Point Cook, with a lovely mild evening to finish the week off.
