Repair Cafe Surf Coast

Repair Cafe Surf Coast Repair Cafes are all about repairing things (together) We are fighting the throwaway culture and building community one fix at a time!

The Repair Café Surf Coast was started by two Fairhaven residents in July, 2017 with volunteers from across the Surf Coast. Each month (except January and July) we bring together a team of skilled volunteers from our community to help visitors repair all their broken and worn-out items and save them from landfill.

Meet Sue.

If you've lived in Aireys for a while, chances are you know Sue—though she'd be quick to point out that her real name isn't "Sue who used to work at the Post Office"! Sue owned and ran the Aireys Inlet Post Office for years after a career in education. Starting as a classroom teacher, she later qualified as a Physical Education teacher and taught until knee problems—and eventually three knee replacements—sent her back to the classroom.

A keen sportsperson, Sue played A Grade basketball and, with her husband, became heavily involved with the NBL and the North Melbourne Giants. After buying the Aireys Post Office in 2007 and selling it in 2019, she chose to stay in the community she loves.

Today, Sue remains busier than ever. She volunteers at the Repair Café, serves as Secretary of the Anglesea Probus Club and editor of its newsletter, is a Rubbish Ranger, an active CWA member, and still finds time for a twice-weekly game of Mahjong.

Meet Liz

Liz has called Moggs Creek home since 2022, but her journey here has taken a few fascinating turns. Originally a speech pathologist working in adult rehabilitation, her career shifted when her husband’s job took them to Singapore in 2010. There, Liz discovered a love of storytelling as a guide at the National Museum. One thing led to another—she completed specialist training and went on to the Asian Civilisations Museum, where she eventually became co-head of guide training.

While in Singapore, Liz also took on the challenge of teaching the demanding Cambridge English as a Second Language course—no small feat!

Since settling on the Surf Coast, Liz has thrown herself into community life. She’s part of the Aireys Community Garden, assistant treasurer at AIRAR, speaker coordinator for the Probus Club, and an active CWA member (and by all accounts, a fantastic cook).

It all started with a simple Mahjong group—and just kept growing. These days, you’ll also find Liz at the Repair Café, helping give textiles a second life.

Shorter session… same big impact. 🔧

We've now trimmed our Repair Café Surf Coast event down to 3 hours (from 4) and still managed to pull off some seriously satisfying stats:

💥 150kg rescued from landfill
🔧 62 successful repairs (and counting!)
🧠 18 people armed with repair know-how
👕 29kg of textiles saved
♻️ 11kg of recycling sorted the right way
👥 75 community members through the doors

With 93 items brought in, only a small bunch couldn’t be revived - not bad for a quick stint!

All made possible by just 23 absolute legends volunteering their time, skills, and patience (especially with those “it was working yesterday” mysteries).

It’s proof that a few hours, a handful of tools, and a great community can go a long way.

Got something creaky, cranky or completely confusing? Bring it along next time - we love a challenge.
