Every now and then, someone wanders into your bar, has a drink and says, “I want to work here. Will you have me?”

Three years ago, that was Josh. He’d just come from Melbourne, and we took a punt on him. The sea gods were smiling on us that day.

Josh threw himself into Hains. He became a Bar Captain, a much loved host of our Wh**ky 101 Masterclass, and then one hell of a host upstairs in our wh**ky lounge.

And that’s just the work stuff. Josh is one of the kindest people around. Taking care of others lives at his core. You saw it in the way he looked after guests, in the home-cooked plates he made for the crew on Friday Family Meal nights, and in the hugs. No one gives a hug like Josh.

Somewhere along the way, we got to watch love blossom on the deck between Josh and another beautiful Hains soul, Chelsea. Now they’re heading back to Melbourne together to see what comes next. We couldn’t be happier for them, even if we’re going to miss them like hell.

You’re only as good as your people. Josh, you made Hains better for everyone who walked through the door and everyone who worked beside you.

“To good ships, to wood ships, to ships that sail the sea…” You know how it goes, sailors.

Fair winds, Josh. Melbourne, you’re bloody lucky to have both of them. ❤️

We opened the GlenDronach Kingsman 1989 for a special tasting event. There are still a few pours left, and we keep wondering who’ll ask for the next one.

Wh**ky has always had our heart upstairs. The GlenDronach is one of the drams we pour most often at Admiral’s Quarters, and The Admiral and Navigator loved it enough to visit the distillery in Scotland this winter gone.

The Kingsman is something else though. A rare bottle, an extraordinary pour, and yes, an expensive one. But it’s open. You don’t have to wonder what it might taste like forever.

Admiral’s Quarters opens again this week. We’d love to see you upstairs.
