*Breeding tip π*
Inbreeding is not always bad. What is bad is continuous inbreeding without a plan.
ππ½ Remember, most chicken breeds we have today were created by crossing 2β3 breeds. After that, breeders in**ed the offspring to fix the traits they wanted (colour, size, comb type, egg production, etc).
Once traits are fixed, you donβt just keep inbreeding blindly. You switch to systems like spiral breeding or line breeding to keep quality but avoid weakness.
β οΈ Importing new blood (outside birds) doesnβt always improve your chickens. Sometimes it brings in more bad traits and your flock performs poorly. So donβt just buy every new bird β test and select carefully.
π Example: You import a rare breed from China π¨π³ into Zimbabwe and you canβt bring in more. How do you avoid inbreeding depression?
1οΈβ£ In the first breedings, avoid 100% related matings like brother Γ sister.
2οΈβ£ Instead, use 50% related pairings like father Γ daughter or mother Γ son. This keeps some relationship but avoids too much concentration.
3οΈβ£ Start breeding pens. Letβs say 4 pens: A, B, C, D.
Females always stay in their pen of origin.
Males rotate in a cycle:
Sons from A β B
Sons from B β C
Sons from C β D
Sons from D β A
This is called spiral breeding π
β
Benefits of spiral breeding:
Prevents too much inbreeding.
Maintains the breed even if you started with very few birds.
Spreads good genes through all pens.
Easy to manage and explain to workers.
π₯ With this system, you can keep a breed strong for many years without losing quality.
