Blueberries

Zimbabwe is Africa's biggest producer of to***co but some farmers believe the country's long-term future could lie in a very different crop - blueberries.
Thanks to a breakthrough in trade talks with China, the world's biggest importer of the nutrient-rich fruit, Zimbabwe has taken a major step towards achieving its ambition of becoming Africa's blueberry capital.
To***co sales surged to a record $1.3bn (£1bn) last year, helped by the rising number of smokers in China.
In contrast, blueberry exports were worth a more modest $30m but horticulture specialist Clarence Mwale is undaunted.
The future is food, not a bad habit," he tells the BBC at his warehouse in Harare.
For the first time, China has agreed to import Zimbabwean blueberries and, crucially, has exempted them from tariffs, in a boost for the southern African state's struggling economy.

Farmers let's tap into this lucrative venture it has the potential to lift thousands of people out of poverty through the provision of employment and value for money for entrepreneurs in Agribusiness..

Agricultural MATTERS.. issues we are now going to be deliberating on...!!

our very existence depends on water – water to
drink and water to grow food. Agriculture relies
on freshwater from rivers, lakes and aquifers.
Rainfed agriculture and much of livestock
production depend on the water from limited
rainfall. Moreover, water-related ecosystems also
sustain livelihoods, food security and nutrition
by, inter alia, supporting inland fisheries and
aquaculture. Supplies of uncontaminated
freshwater are needed for safe drinking water,
and to ensure hygiene and food safety standards
to guarantee human health. In addition, water
has numerous other uses and supports other
human activities

Koekoek

The Potchefstroom Koekoek breed was developed in South Africa in the 50s by Chris Marais at the Research Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying which is situated in Potchefstroom. Initially, the Black Australorps were crossed with the White Leghorn hens. The first generation hens and c***s were then mated with each other. Some of the progeny from this showed a striped plumage. The hens with the striped plumage were then crossed with Plymouth Rock c***s

The progeny with yellow skin was then selected. The Potchefstroom Koekoek c***s were then crossed with the Black Australorp hens. The crossing was done in order to ensure as much Black Australorp blood as possible in the progeny. With time, only yellow skin c***s were used and the breeding was continued until all the progeny had only the yellow skin and striped feather color. Today the Potchefstroom Koekoek looks like this below. Note the yellow skin and striped plumage:-

The Potchefstroom Koekoek is specifically suited for South African conditions. It is a truly indigenous South African bird with bright yellow yolks. It is a dual-purpose bird that is highly suited for free range conditions. It lays enough eggs and is also sufficiently broody.

The Potch Koekoek is a happy and active chicken, a great forager. It will scratch around and catch the worms and also eats a variety of greens. Thanks to their varied diets from intensive foraging, they produce some of the richest yolks-very delightful orange yolks. They large brown-shelled eggs and their yellow meat is delicious! A study by FAO found that it performs better than all of the other indigenous chickens in South Africa.

POULTRY BUSINESS..

The poultry sector is the fastest growing and most flexible of all livestock sectors. Driven primarily by very strong demand it has expanded, consolidated and globalised over the past 15 years in countries of all income levels. Livestock is fundamental to the livelihoods of about one billion of the world’s poorest people. Rural poultry, in particular, is essential for the livelihood of many resource-poor farmers often being the only asset they possess. It makes up about 80 percent of poultry stocks in low-income food-deficit countries and significantly contributes to:
(i) improving human nutrition, providing food (eggs and meat) with high quality nutrients and micronutrients;
(ii) (ii) generating a small income and savings, especially for women, thus enhancing the capacity to cope with shocks and reducing economic vulnerability;
(iii) (iii) providing manure for vegetable garden and crop production. The importance of the socio-cultural and religious functions of village poultry production for smallholder livelihoods, beyond its economic or nutritional importance, is also widely recognized.
